Boot lid opens, roof not rising, fixed.

Post by steve the grease »

Hi there . I just want to thank the other posters on here for their friendly advice, without which I don't think I would have ever got this roof fixed. Now repaired and working great.
The roof would sometimes open but when asking it to close, the boot would open , but the roof would not rise. After lots of head scratching, post reading, thinking and investigation, I realised I was hearing a sound similar to that when there's air in a power stering system , a sort of 'whooshing sound' followed by a motor noise and then after about 15 seconds the motor cuts out.
I decided that what I was hearing was air in the system and then the pump running dry. I investigated and indeed the level in the tank did seem very low noting the felt pen marks and cross on the translucent reservoir. I obtained oil from Peugeot ( thats not cheap is it?) and tried to top up the tank . Being an engineering sort of guy I tried the official method, by undoing the allen screw near the ball bearing...... I can confirm that it just does not work, the oil pours out again, don't even bother trying. I decided to remove the tank, following the good advice of the poster on this forum.
I made 2 marks with tippex so I could line the reservoir in the same place, so the level marks would be right. Letting the pump rest in a vertical plane I undid the jubillee clip and carefully unclipped the plastic tank, topped the tank up close to the top, clipped it back in place, did up the clip, it takes longer to write than do.
Carefully placing the padding round the tank and pump I reassembled everything, now for the test. Slight air noise at the start , otherwise perfect. Second run , no noise, perfect. I undid the covers again and checked the oil level now between marks ( it had been a bit high). There was evidence of wetness near the rams so this is where the oil had gone. Problem, air in pump/ no oil/ low oil.
result fixed and now working perfectly. Thanks everyone :)
