My Voyage to Restoring Used Abused Pug206cc

Post by tyealia »

Hi everyone,

I purchased a Peugeot206cc used a couple of months ago from a friend without completely inspecting it. When I first test drove it there were a few problems and he told me about a couple of other ones but I didn't know the complete story.

Apparently there had been a flood a while back and the pug was a victim getting completely flooded and covered in water(Salty Sea water were near the beach). The mechanics salvaged it and saved it before worse problems could happen but the flooding was the least of my worries the following is a blog of all of its problems and my journey to repairing it! :D it is my first car and I feel a certain connection to it it's very fun to drive and I always get compliments on how it looks at night.

Located: Mazatlan, Mexico
Model: Pugeot 206cc 2005 Black, Red leather interior
Car: 100,000km (Before) Engine: 8,000km new engine after old was destroyed from flooding

1. Car needs to be Repainted and polished (Finished)
Cost - $700 + polish 50, 750 total

I had a local painter here paint the car he was recommended by a friend. He did a pretty shoddy job there are many details that are missing and cracks that he didn't completely paint after he told me to wait a bunch of months for the paint to completely dry before polishing it we took it to another polisher who confirmed the job was pretty shoddy and fixed a lot of the details.

Current Car repair total - $750

2. Key needs to be replaced it is rusted and bent (Somewhat finished)
Cost - ebay new key parts $30, key breaks off in the boot 160/2 (Split with my mechanic) $80 total $110

So I ordered a key off Mexican eBay (mercado libre) it came it's basically the metal part and the holder it doesn't come with any of the chips inside. I replaced the holder and was waiting to get the metal part replaced in a week however my mechanic broke the bent key off trying to open the boot so we had to call a lock expert to remake a key from the mold of the boot block and remove the broken piece.

Car Repair total - $860

4. Breaks squealing, wheel turns to left when I let it go (alignment needed)
Cost - $350 full service oil replacement servicing, new brakes and alignment

I had the car fully serviced at a local shop they realigned everything fixing the way the car used to turn left, changed all of the breaks and replaced the oil. I can see the difference now and driving it feels much smoother.

10. Front side turn signals not working
11. Check engine light beeping

Cost $150

I had my mechanic take the car to his electrician friend who fixed the side turn signals and used a machine he had to check what the check engine lights meant. He found out that I needed a new oil oxidation scanner and radiator scanner which he replaced both of the check engine light is now gone.

You are very brave taking on a car that has been flooded. That would have been a write off over here.
Cheers Col.

12. Climate control and top clock cant read the info due to possible sun damage on lcd

I had my mechanic fix the top clock there was an electrical short however for the air-conditioner screen I took it to a few electricians and they told me it was sun damage and unfixable without replacing the part and I got a quote from a scrappy for $300 not really worth it considering it works fine just looks ugly. I will post again if i decide to replace it in the future.

Hey Capncol, when it flooded the previous owner took it to the mechanic immediately he was in the bar, and left after a huge downpour and it was flooded, about 8 hours later he took it to a mechanic who took out alot of the parts dried the engine and other parts and cleaned it.

What I fail to mention and ill put it in the description now is that the engine was ruined, they put in a new peugeot engine from a 10,000 km scrapped old peugeot so part of the deal was I was getting a new engine even though it had flooded. (Confirmed by papework and mechanic who i now use and is a friend)

18. Car squeeling time belt needs realignment and replacement (Almost finished

Cost - 2 time belts - $30, 1 tensor pulley $65, labor and install $60 - total $155

This was a big problem for me at a certain point my wheel was unturnable I drove it for a bit as this happened in the grocery store but you had to turn really hard because the *auxiliary belt had gone and as soon as I got home the battery died because apparently the time belt charges it in some way.

I went to the mechanic and he noticed that my tensor pulley was bent and it had caused the last time belt I replaced to wear out within two weeks we went to the local AutoZone and replaced the tensor pulley and the *auxiliary belt and it functioned for a long time now a few months later I'm hearing a squeaking sound and the mechanic is telling me I have to replace another pulley that is causing problems in the alignment and is slightly broken to fix the sound and I may need yet another *auxiliary belt.

Waiting for an estimate.

Total car repair cost - $1615

It's not the timing belt that drives the alternator/steering pump but the auxiliary belt.

The easy way to remember is this:

the timing belt is hidden under the black plastic covers at the left end of the engine. If this goes, you will wreck the engine internals (valves, etc). It also drives the water pump which is also hidden behind the covers.

the auxiliary belt is the one you can see at the same end but outside the engine covers. It will drive the alternator, the steering pump and the a/c compressor.

Admire your perseverance, but water does a lot of damage (salty is worse) and you could end up with problem after problem ... :?

Thanks Gazza, I was getting confused with all the belt names timing, auxillary, drive belt you cleared it up for me. And yes I agree the water damage is a huge upset hopefully the fact that the car was cleaned immediately after has helped alot but I do think some of the electrical issues I had were related to the salt corroding things.

I had an electrician go through most of the car and he says it should be fine he doesn't see any major flaws, the only issue is he said that the water might have cut all electric parts normal life in half.
