Ticking noise from Injectors?

Post by cabrioman »

I have just completed a full service but there is still a noticeable ticking noise coming from the injector area.
I believe the car had been sitting for quite a while so i am going to try an injector cleaner, but just wondering if there's anything else i could check.
Thanks

That's quite normal to hear injectors ticking.
Cheers Col.

I wonder if it could be a noisy hydraulic tappet rather than an injector (assuming the tappets ARE hydraulic - I'm not too familiar with the engine internals). Injector cleaner wouldn't hurt it - in fact it could only be a good thing, but it would be a shame to throw money at something which didn't solve your issue.
Perhaps an engine flush and oil change might have better results. Not guaranteed, but just as likely.
I would try using a piece of hose as a stethoscope to narrow down the area of the noise even further - I find it works surprisingly well. :)

Cheers for the reply.
I have completed the service yesterday with flush and new oil but it hasn't made a difference.
I'll buy a cleaner at the end of the week and if that doesn't work i'll get some new gaskets and have a look at the tappets.
Can i run the engine with the cam cover off?

You CAN, but you won't want to for very long because oil will get splattered everywhere!
If it's just had new oil you may well find that it quietens down after a bit of a thrash.
The engine could have just stopped in a position where the oil all got squeezed out of one of the tappets when it was stood for a while.

Did think that. Any ideas what's causing it?

You are going to have to live with it or change them (not cheap)

There are various causes. The check valves could be stuck or not seating. Or the inner pistons could be stuck. Either way the cure is to replace them.
Cheers Col.

So they can't be saved? No chance of removing, cleaning and refitting?

Not really. They are not a serviceable item, so if you did manage to get them apart, you wouldn't be able to get parts. It's a big job, so if it was me doing it. I would put new ones in as I would be peed off if it was just as noisy afterwards.
Ours has noisy tappets and we just put up with it. You can't really hear it from inside in any case.
Cheers Col.

I have a spare head that I could sell, and most of them should be salvageable from it.
