HELP!!! - Engine immobiliser fault / Eco Mode Active

Currently not impressed.

Bought 2002 1.6 NFU for the missus. Bearings on 1st, 2nd and 3rd gone. Bought second hand gearbox. Fitted gearbox, but starter motor was not aligned correctly. Resolved that and she drove the car for a week. I found a few other problems while doing the gearbox. So I sorted them this weekend. New wishbones, droplinks and brake discs. Boot struts need replacement too. So removed and refitted rear seats.

Removed the battery (Not following BSI procedure .....) to change it over night.

Refitted the battery. Took the car for a spin to check for any knocks. All good. Tuesday morning flat battery.

Tried to jump start. No good.

Last night, bought a new battery. I thought I would have a check around the engine bay to see if I could see anything causing the battery issue.

I found that the earth on the gearbox to the battery was slightly loose. The earth to the wiring harness had lost all its pvc coating. Inside the flexipipe above this i found five wires melted together.

So, I striped these wires and put some heat shrink on them and the earth cables. Refitted all cables. Reconnected the battery.

I then carried out the BSI procedure three times. The Engine Immobiliser Fault is no longer displayed, but Eco mode active is displayed.

The car wont start. It also sounds as though the fuel pump is continously on.

I am now on the train to work as the missus has my car. Lack of funds and a slight lack of sense of humour is on the horizon. HELP!!! Please.....

Hi and welcome.
Unfortunately not following the battery disconnect procedure is like playing Russian roulette, and there is a high probability you will corrupt the BSI.

The loose earth to the gearbox means the power for the starter is being carried by the main wiring loom earth as you have found.

I would go back and check the continuity of the wires you have repaired, and check for melted plugs and sockets and other wiring.
Eco mode is quite normal if battery voltage is a bit low. It simply means certain non vital systems like the wipers have been put to sleep to conserve power. It will go away once engine is running.
Does everthing else work with the battery fully charged?

If the wiring all checks out, then the BSI is the next thing to look at.

Is it the correct battery for the 206cc? Should be 190mm high. If someone has replaced it with the cheaper one for the hatchback it will only be 175mm high. That would place an extra strain on the terminals and can cause loss of continuity.

Capncol - Thanks Rechecked all wires. Tried BSI reset. Still no joy. I assume that the fuel pump being on constantly could be the issue. Pull fuse 2 and it turns off. Only option I can see is finding a copy of Servicebox or Peugeot Planet....

GrandadMonkey - The old battery was the 175mm with a block of wood underneath it. The new battery is the 190mm. Thanks

Update!!!

Checked further back on wiring harness. Found more melted cables.

Trying to remove wiring harness. I have disconnected from Fusebox and all connectors, but I am trying to find the last couple of connectors once the harness passes the throtle body. Any ideas?? Thanks

Ok. Latest update....

Replaced the engine wiring loom. Bought Lexia cable and PP2000. Able to see and access ABS ECU, Roof ECU and Instrument cluster. I able run all test on these units. But I cant see the BSI, ECU or any other units. Bought a replacement lock set, key, BSI and ECU. I followed the soft boot proceedure. Reconnect the Lexia cable. I get the same results again. Has anyone got any ideas? Car still wont start.....

Assuming no mil light or DTC's, go back to basics. Have you got fuel & sparks at the engine?

Sorry, am lost.... mil light - Immobiliser? Then no. DTC? Error codes ? Will check fuel flow and spark tomorow night. Just confused as to why now ecu or bsi response to pp2000.

MIL (malfunction indicator lamp) = Engine management light
DTC (diagnostic trouble code) = Code reader required for EOBD error codes.

Sorry, if you're brave enough to tackle gearbox, I assumed you would understand what I meant.

Was the loom you fitted the same as the old one? Same part number? Did the new BSI / ECU have the same numbers as the old one? Sure there is no more wiring damage?

Not brave... Just stupid and enough sawdust between m ears to work out how to swap the gearbox over without a hoist or pit, and just by popping the passenger side wheel and driveshaft off...

The wiring loom, BSI and ECU were all the same part numbers and same year.

The only other wiring I can think of checking would be the loom between the ECU and BSI as I can read and test all functions of the roof ecu, ABS and Instument Cluster.

OK the Donor BSI, ECU and Key are from 206 XR / XT 2ANFUF TU5JP4 NFU 1587 BOSCH ME 7.4.4 MA 5 Speed Manual. My car is 206 CC 2DNFUF TU5JP4 NFU 1587 BOSCH ME 7.4.4 MA 5 Speed Manual.

Same fault on both units. The ECU has not replied on all units except ABS ECu and Roof ECU.

Don't know if Lexia cable is ok.

Need help to sort this out before the missus knocks me out and puts me under the patio...!!...!!

Still ongoing. Just pulled out main wiring harness from ecu to bsi. Its knackered. I know the engine wiring harnesses are unique models. Is it the same with these? Anyone selling one? Cheers

Aha, I've only just seen this - sorry I missed the previous post.
The wiring loom that I have to sell is indeed from a 206CC 1.6 TU5JP4 ME7.4.4 MA 5 speed manual.

There is a minor issue with it, which is that the car it came from got crunched at the N/S/F corner, and the ABS plug got smashed and needs to be replaced. I already have the necessary replacement plug, but you would need to swap it over wire by wire. This is not hard, just time consuming and care would be required or you could incorrectly wire your ABS.

You will find the part number of your main loom on a label on one of the multi-plugs that connects it into the BSI.
On mine this number is 96 520025 80.
