Automatic gear box fault

Hi all I am very new here. So please bear with me.
I have had my 206cc 03 plate for about a year. Just recently ( ish) when I have been driving along getting to approx 50 mph it slips/jumps and the ice/sport mode lights flash and the display says automatic gear box fault or something shorter. It still drives and if I turn off engine it is ok. But I am worried that the fault will continue and get worse. Can someone advise me what is best to do. My partner doesn't drive so can't ask him nor does my dad and I don't want to take it into a garage and be told that I need something really expensive done only to find it doesn't help. I don't have a lot of money ( who does?) so want to do the best thing for me. I live in an area that you need a car so can't be without something.

I have an 03 with the same fault. I find if you after this happens it won't go into 4th and seems slow. If I stop and turn the engine off and on again it is fine. My car has 42K miles and full history so the gearbox should have been serviced as it should??

Worth trying an oil flush and filter change if fluid is dirty. Got any fault codes?
