When to have Cambelt changed and cost?

Post by han18 »

My 1.6 206cc is 11 years old in April with 49k on the clock, is the Cambelt due a change? And how much would this cost me?

Many thanks :)

Get them to fit a new water pump at the same time ... that way you should be OK for another few years.

I think 10 years is too long. The rubber belt will start to harder way before that and then start cracking, as you often see on the aux belt. For me 5-6 years would be a more realistic replacement period, or 50-60K miles. And a cam belt failure on a twincam engine isn't a pretty sight. I have a bag full of bent and broken valves from a diffferent make which reminds me to get mine done!

It may be that early in the life Peugeot didn't want to put off prospective buyers with large service bills early in the life of the car ... Alfa did that and a couple of years ago on their 2.0 Twinspark engines, HALVED the cam belt periods from 72K to 36K and 6 to 3 years. By then they had stopped selling cars with that engine so it didn't hurt sales ...

Sorry to restart a thread!!

My 2.0 se 206 cc is a 52 plate and has 79000 miles. The service book is up to date with a non-dealer stamp at every specified service recommendation. But there is no mention of a cam belt change. So I presume it has not been replaced. Does anyone know the required time/miles for a change on this engine. My husband wants to get it done to be on the safe side but I don't want to pay out on something that won't be necessary.

Thanks.

Yes Julie it is due so you won't be wasting your money. As shadow says, get your water pump and idler pulleys renewed at the same time. Fresh anti-freeze mixture should be put in after the coolant is drained and flushed which should improve circulation too.

Just to let you all know I got my Cambelt done on my 2002 reg peugeot (50,000 miles) a couple of weeks ago and the garage told me the old belt was showing metal so I was lucky I got it in on time! Don't risk it!!!
