central locking going nuts and economy mode active

Post by Nellie »

Before I push this car off a cliff...which at the minute it's safe from me doing so because it wont start

Car wouldn't start on Sunday, called RAC they came out, jumped started the battery for me, found an oil leak  and said it needed sorting ASAP. Took it to the garage & left it there until Wednesday to fix oil leak, battery and to look at central locking problem as it had been locking and unlocking itself randomly whilst parked up and whilst driving.

Driving home last night - a journey of 3 miles the central locking activated itself 57 times.

Jump in the car this morning, even before key in ignition, it's lock unlock lock unlock lock unlock, turn the key, "economy mode active" pings up in the dash and car sluggishly turns over. Battery as flat as a pancake once again.

I'm rapidly reaching the end of my teacher with the flippin thing.. Does anyone have any ideas please.

Did they put a brand new battery on it? Was it the correct spec battery from Peugeot? The hatchback battery is not as tall and can cause disconnection problems as it places strain on them because the leads don't reach properly. Are you using a Peugeot specialist garage?

The central locking problem could be a faulty solenoid. If one locking solenoid doesnt lock then the vehicle will attempt to unlock all solenoids.

HI GM, many thanks for your reply.
There was nothing wrong with the battery so it wasn't replaced. It's holding its charge, no leaking cells/dumping etc. It certainly looks like the correct spec battery, the cables to it do not appear to be stretched or under tension.
And here's where I come across as a blonde female; where do I look for solenoids please? Is it going to be obvious if one is faulty?

Bitten the bullet & it's going, I've spent over £1500 on it this year, I am not spending any more. Just part ex'ed it for another convertible - not a french one though. Many thanks everybody for your help.

That's a shame, but understandable under the circumstances. What are you getting next?
Cheers Col.

My money would still have been on the battery. Never mind, better luck with your new car.

Let me guess......................a Vauxhall?

Good guess GM :)

Until child has got his own car/moved out/gone to university, I can't get away with a 2 seater (which rules out the Merc which I lust after) so out of the 4 seater tin tops ideally I'd have liked an eos, but for the same money as the twin top I'd be looking at base model 70000 miles and a 6yr old car, rather than a 3yr old top spec model astra with 17000 on the clock. It's ex motorbility & coming with 2 years warranty, the garage is walking distance, the main salesman lives opposite me and my father has been good friends with the owner of the garage for donkey's years, so I think i got a bit of a bargain :) They know that mine has a fault but they also know how much money I've spent on it this year (they did all the work...if I hadn't been paying trade prices for the work it would have been pushing £2000) Garage owner was surprised to find out it's a 10yr old car - said it looks much newer.

So new car (already christened Desmond) arrives wither Monday or Tuesday, then they'll PD & service it & I pick it up Wednesday/Thursday.

Poor peugeot currently sat in my drive with its battery disconnected, just in case I have to get somewhere between now & new-car-day. Feel very disloyal...... I hate seeing old friends go, even if they have turned out to be money-eating, unreliable driveway ornaments :)
