URGENT HELP needed...think this might be a dangerous problem

Post by han18 »

Since I had my car 'serviced' 2 months ago, I feel I have had MORE problems. Yesterday I got stuck for an hour and a half in rush hour Bath traffic because my car was firstly revving by itself (which has happened before, but by the time I had someone come out to look at it it had stopped - typically!). It was going up to about 2000 whatever they are called at some points and I was getting some pretty odd looks from people in the street as I was actually stuck in traffic....

Upon turning my ignition off and on again 3 times, the problem was still there and then my engine light came on 'anti-pollution fault'. I have had this fault come up before and then used BP petrol which has always 'solved' the problem. I also take the filter out and give it a shake (I don't even think it got changed on the service if i'm honest!!!). And then my puggy went 'limp mode' and the accelerator wasn't responding at all. I pulled over. Tried again a few mins later, failed again, and then I was stuck until someone could come and help me with a screwdriver. Shook the filter, light went away, drove home fine.

Went to uni again today no problems. Drive home, started revving by itself. Then went into limp mode with the fault again. Managed to get home after praying that it would stop messing up but the engine light stayed on.

Needless to say I am getting a bit angry now as I rely on my car to get me to uni 4 days a week and work 2 days a week, I need something RELIABLE.... This is not the first problem I have had with my Peugeot and I have only had it since January! It was my dream car but it is turning into a disaster.
I worry that it has some sort of mind of it's own and is going to rev straight into the back of someone... :hmm:

Any thoughts, help or advice is MASSIVELY appreciated. Before the car gets a new home!!! :sorry:

My specifications:

2002 reg, 1.6l S, 46,000 miles

Thank you! :love-thx:

Could be sticking throttle body or a faulty throttle pedal. You need to plug it into a good diagnostic machine to find out what the problem is. The fault codes will have been stored.. You don't need a main dealer to check, just someone with a good machine.

When requesting help of a technical nature, please give as much detail of the fault as possible along with details of exact model, engine size & type, gearbox, year, mileage, and any relevant work carried out to try to solve the problem to help us help you.
Better still, put the details in your signature.

What filter are you shaking? I'm intrigued by this as a fix ... :hmm:

2002 model SHOULD be EOBD diagnostics compatible, so if he has one of those it should read the codes. Sometime though they don't work 100% and it comes back with a list of strange codes. But I'd give it a try.

It might be something as simple as cleaning the throttle body or un-plugging and re-plugging the throttle connections, but the diagnostic will at least tell you where to start looking.

My filter looks quite dirty, should have been eeplaced on its service but I don't think it was. Would changing the filter maybe sort it out?
Today when I started her up the light wasn't on, but then after work driving home I had the same light, fault and stopping car :(

Thank you both for your responses.

It's doing it again now, and revving by itself, really scary. Ringing my local Pug specialist garage this morning to get them to take a look at it. Getting a bit ridiculous now :(
