Hello ...

Post by chellebaker »

Hello to everyone. I am new :)
I have only had my 206 since last Friday and have loved every minute of it until this morning :( .
Unfortunatly, I have an anti pollution warning/catalitic converter warning and engine management light come on. I managed to get to work although at a very slow bumpy speed.
I have a man coming out to do a diagnostic test this afternoon and hope to know more then.
Feeling worried that I have made the wrong choice in buying this car - but it looks so good

Let us know how you get on. When was it last serviced? What sort of use is it getting? Tell us a lot more about the car and we'll try to help.

Hello GrandadMonkey and thank you for your reply.
Being honest I bought the car with little history. I only have receipts for parts as the guy I bought it from said he serviced it himself. He told me it was serviced at 68k and it is now just over 70k. I am unsure if the cam belt has been changed as there is no receipt for this, yet the guy told me he had done it. I think I will book it in to get this done rather than take the chance.
I bought this car on impulse which I know is not sensible but really fell in love with it as it looked so beautiful and drove well. It is the 2lt (2002), black. I have owned one other pug in the past which was a fantastic car, 205 1.9 GTI, until someone decided to t-bone me. Unfortunatly it didn't survive!!
I don't do too many miles as I work about 6 miles away from home. I would guess I drive around 70 miles a week on average.
The diagnostic test showed idle misfires. The chap who did the test advised me to change the coil pack and spark plugs and said this was a common fault, so I will get this done at the weekend.
The car drove perfectly this morning and no warning lights! Also, we had a heavy downpour of rain last night and I was worried about the roof but everything was nice and dry.
I guess it takes time to get to know a car and all its little ways and although I am having a few problems I really love this car.

If the cam belt has been done then there is no need to do it again as you'll know. A garage may be able to take a look to see if it's a new belt but it can be a job to tell and the risk is a big one. Similarly with the spark plugs, they may not have been renewed either, or may not have the correct Bosch ones installed so it is worth renewing them. I personally wouldn't change the coil pack at this stage, but other folk might have a different view on that.

A problem with only using a car for short runs is that the engine barely gets fully warmed up and as a consequence runs with a rich mixture while cold. That can leave unburnt fuel deposits which trigger off a warning from the lambda sensors in the exhaust. That can throw it into "get you home mode" and cause the poor running symptoms that you have experienced. A good long run at brisk engine speeds will often sort that out - what is sometimes called "an Italian tune-up".

However there is another well known issue with the hydraulic tappets on the 2.0 litre engine. Search on this forum and you'll find out more about that.

Anyway, if I was in any doubt about the service history of the car and was unable to do it myself I'd seek the services of a recommended independent Peugeot specialist and get them to service the car properly.

Welcome to the forum by the way.

Thank you. All points noted.
New coil pack and spark plugs being fitted at weekend by my wonderful father in law who raised his eyebrows at me when i presented my cc to him. He is not a fan of pugs.
Thanks for the great welcome.
