1.6 cambelt change?
Hi from a newbie. I have a 1.6 allure (petrol) that is six years old and has 44K on the clock. Can anyone please advise when the cambelt should be changed, or anything else I should be aware of? Many thanks

Re: 1.6 cambelt change?
But would you leave it that long?
One my Alfa the cambelt changes were 72,000 or 6 years ... after a number of failures within that period, some of which Alfa paid for, the recommended change is now 36000 or 3 years!
I think I'd play safe and change it more frequently, especially if you can do-it-yourself ... our 206CC 2.0 had 59000 on clock (2001). There wasn't any trace of a change so I did it soon after purchase. It was up on the years by then ... but looked pristine! It's not normally the belt that goes though ... it's the tensioners and idlers ... they fail or seize ... and pistons meet valves ... not a pretty sight.

Re: 1.6 cambelt change?
Thanks everyone for your replies. I've had my 206cc since new and until last year I was using a Peugeot dealer for servicing. On my last servicing invoice from them was printed "(dealer name) recommend cambelt is changed at 5 years/50,000 miles, whichever sooner" and around that time I was sent a letter from them "Warning: is your Cambelt due for renewal?" warning that the belt can deteriorate over time and is more likely to need replacing on the grounds of age than mileage, which spooked me. I checked the peugeot website to look for manufacturer recommendation but this wasn't helpful. I'm a lady in her sixties who has to rely on trusting others for good advice and last year, on a friend's recommendation, I changed to an independent self employed service engineer who said there was no way I needed a cambelt at that stage. Are dealers just looking for work?

Re: 1.6 cambelt change?
From the above evidence I would say "no, they're not".
However yours is in a bit of a grey area, being above the age limit but below the mileage.
It makes it a judgement call. i would be inclined to ask what the independent self employed service engineer recommends.
My other half's is an even more extreme example being 6 years old but having only done 19,000 miles. However I won't be rushing to change it until it gets to about the 60k mark.

Re: 1.6 cambelt change?
Our new addition is 5 years old and just turned 40K. I won't change it till the recommended 80K / 10years,or only slightly before. The manufacturers build in an element of safety with there recommended service interval, so no point in changing it early.
Cheers Col.

Re: 1.6 cambelt change?
You're brave, especially bearing in mind your past experiences. I realise that the above was only 4k beyond it's recommended, but I wouldn't have thought that they could predict their lifespan to such accuracy.

See the last (3rd) page of this Australian Peugeot service schedule. Recommends 80,000 km (50,000 miles) or 4 years.
Our 1.6 has done 28,000 miles and is 7 years old. We will have the timing belt renewed (complete with new water pump and fresh coolant) when the car is 10 years old. By then it should have done 40,000 miles. The UK climate is less extreme than Oz and our car is garaged most of the time.
Better safe than sorry. If the belt breaks the bill would be horrendous.

Re: 1.6 cambelt change?
Nearly every recommended cambelt change says something like "adverse conditions should be taken into account" I would imagine the shorter service interval for Australia is due to heat and dust.GrandadMonkey wrote:http://www.peugeot.com.au/media/deliacm ... d0f042.pdf

I would think Siberia would have a shorter interval too.
Some Fords are over 100K for cambelt change.
