New Pug Owner that Needs Help.....Please

Post by Ladybrum »

Someone please help me.....
So far I've had the folloiwng replaced on my Pug (02 Plate) 2.0L...

Cam Belt, Seals, Alt Belt, Downpipe/Cat Replaced, Lambda Sensor, Rear Box section (exhaust), Clamp, Diagnostics, Lights reset on dash, Front Shocks (both), Top Mounts and Drop Links.

And now I have:
1) A banging/clunking noise which seems to be coming from the front of the car when I go round corners, catch a speed bump wrong or go over a really rough patch of road, (not all the time I hasten to add at the moment).
2) A clunking sound sometimes when I change into 2nd gear. If I change into 2nd slowly then it doesn't make this noise.
3) I also have a steering wheel that does not sit straight, when driving straight the steering wheel is ofset to the right hand side but if I let go of the steering wheel the car then starts to pull slightly to the left (could this be alignment or tracking???).
4) Also, when accelerating, I can hear what can only be described as a tinny rasping noise (doesn't seem to do this once in 5th and at speed though).
5) With the roof down, the car feels quite 'wobbly' when driving. Not sure if this is just me getting used to driving with no roof on or whether there is a suspension problem (or other).

If anyone has any ideas as to what these problems may be I would appreciate the info before I take it into a garage this weekend so I at least look as though I know what may be wrong!
Thanks
Paula

Was all this done at the same garage?
If it wasn't for what you have stated has been done, I would have said
Item 1 would be Shock absorbers, top mounts, anti rollbar links and bushes, In fact all the things you have had changed.
The suspension units would need removing to do the job, and when re- fitted the steering alignment checked.
Which is what would cause item 3 if not done/done correctly, and probably item 5 if the tracking is out.
Item 4 sounds like an exhaust blow (from the gaskets on the new cat???)
Item 5 could be related to the clunking over bumps or could be a soft / broken engine mount.

Either way, without seeing for myself, I would query the quality of the repairs.
Cheers Col.

I just noticed your earlier post where you got a warranty? Hope this was done under the warranty?

Hi Cap,
None of the work was done under the warranty as it ran out (only given 3 months warranty with the car) before these problems began. As for the quality of the repairs, it's a garage I've used for 20+ years and I've never had any problems with the work over all that time.
What would you suggest getting checked out first from the problems I've listed, what would be the priority? I'm hoping to take it into the garage this weekend so would like a fair idea of what to ask them to look at/replace first, bearing in mind, I travel up and down a motorway for work 5 days a week so clock up some mileage at the moment!

Difficult really.
If you are taking it back to the same garage, I would ask them to re-check their work pointing out the banging rattling and suspected exhaust leak. Also point out about the steering wheel, and you suspect tracking is out. Then let them see what they find. If you go in there with a new list of components to check, it gives them a "wriggle out" if you see what I mean. For instance if you say to them "could it be an engine mount?", they can then *change it* and charge you for it. Whereas the actual fault could be something not fitted correctly. Not that I'm cynical or anything. ;)

If they do find a soft mount, at least you are semi prepared for it.
Cheers Col.

item 1 could also be the actual suspension arm bushes being worn. My CC made similar noises until I replaced them,

Thanks guys :)

The car has gone into be checked and so far the back brakes have been replaced and the exhaust was clamped too high under the car and blowing. Tracking is being done tomorrow which will hopefully sort out the steering wheel; clunking round corners noise and 'tappety' noise from engine are being looked at tomorrow so I'll let you know if and what they find.
Have also advised me to change the fuel from Shell regular unleaded to high octane for the tappety noise if it's not the tappets that have gone... Will keep you informed....
