cd player in wifes 206 refuses to play can we buy a second hand one to replace and does it need a code

If it's the same as our 2001, then yes, you will need a code. Not sure about later ones ... I've disconnected our 206 HDi battery a couple of times and it's just worked.
Make sure you get the right CD player ... your's is probably known as the RD1 ... there are pre-mux and mux and they are NOT interchangable.
