Odd noise when slowing down
Hi everybody
Battery sorted but earlier today an odd noise started up. Everything ok with engine on and not moving. Slight catching sound when moving and accelerating but when slowing down it sounds like when you put something in the spokes of a bicycle slower you go slower the noise in or out of gear.
Any ideas?
Forgot to mention the noise is from the front.

Re: Odd noise when slowing down
Does it only do it in certain gears, i.e. 1st, 2nd or can you hear it at all speeds?

Seems to be all speeds all gears and neutral as well so don't think it is the gearbox. Quite loud at speed as take foot off accelerator.

Re: Odd noise when slowing down
Could it be something caught underneath? Difficult for me to tell as I'm currently not built to slip under car and drive and road outside house are 1 in 10. Plays havoc on handbrake.

Not the gearbox then...that's the extent of my "technical" knowledge I'm afraid
Maybe one of the others will be able to suggest what it could be.

Re: Odd noise when slowing down
Just taken it to my local mechanic and he says it is the diff and I would be best putting a s/h gearbox in it.

Re: Odd noise when slowing down
What year is your car, as they had slightly different clutch & gear operation?

Re: Odd noise when slowing down
Hi There it is 2002 2.0 16v SE. Just been out in it and the noise was much less. It had been parked on drive (1 in 10). 3 Oil warning lights showed when I started it. By time I got back noise much worse (warmed up) but oil warning lights showed low oil - will put a litre in an move to level ground to check oil levels. Could it be similar for gearbox = low oil?

Re: Odd noise when slowing down
Yes could be. Your mech should be able to check it. A secondhand gearbox may be hard to find as yours is hydraulic clutch. In your shoes, I would try and get your own 'box repaired.
Cheers Col.

Re: Odd noise when slowing down
Call me old-fashioned but when I was young it was normal to carry out an oil change at regular intervals on the gearbox as well as the engine. Nowadays they don't bother. If my gearbox started making funny noises I think I'd try draining the gearbox oil and replacing with fresh oil of the correct grade.

Re: Odd noise when slowing down
Hi everybody
Just got the car back from my mech. Changed gearbox for a low mileage s/h. All in £220. Just spent 3 hours test driving it ( M56 was closed due to a tanker accident did not know as had not retuned radio after battery disconnect until I hit the queue 5 miles into test drive) Initial squeak changing into and out of 2nd, seems like a rubber sort of squeak, vanished when warm.
He said gearbox oil was "gritty" when he drained it. I have only owned since March and have receipt for clutch replacement in January so assumed it had had an oil change! Not so according to the mech.
On another note, car juddered quite badly at 75mph. Was going to have tracking checked but mech said that he had noticed that one of the brake discs had been misaligned - he says he sees it a lot on peugeot 206's as screws are difficult to get in. Judder much reduced although did not have to much chance to check due to traffic jam!
He did a good check over and says it needs a replacement oil pump as there is a leak from the oil pump body. Does the radiator have to come out for this?

Re: Odd noise when slowing down
Have to say.............You seem to have found a good mech there!
Re: Juddering. Try swapping tyres front to back, as the wheel balance may be out.
Oil pump may just need a new gasket and can be done with rad in place, but it's easier with it out.

Re: Odd noise when slowing down
He's great and has easy access to 206 cc second hand parts, also has a passion for all sorts of sports cars and the odd 2cv too!
He wants to try with rad in place, has the pump from car the gearbox came from and feels best to change.
I was interested that after he sorted DIY brake disc most of judder went. Wheels might be balanced but hub wasn't ?
