There are 2 live feeds to the unit. One is a permanent live, the other is ignition switched. The perm live is to keep the memory alive, and this is the one you need to sort out. It'slikely to be a blown fuse. If it's not you need to Use a test light/meter to identify the feeds and follow the connection until you find where the fault is.

ive tried to switch the leads around on back of stereo ie red and yellow bullet clips but still no memory.
ive just plugged my old stereo into the car (blaupunkt casablance cd51) using the same connectors and i have memory on that stereo but soon as i plug the sony one in it doesnt remember the presets. im confused now lol

is there a lead i can buy that will automatically sort this out and if so what would i be looking for exactly

Have you got the manual for the unit?
If not, you can download it as a PDF file - just type "sony cdx gt26 manual download" into Yahoo or Google. It could be that it has an adaptor lead with the wrong pin-outs.

I think it's possible to buy ISO convertor blocks ... depending on difference between the age of the car and new radio, they could be wired differently ...

... or take it to a car audio specialist ...

problem now solved

after searching for what seemed like forever and ringing round several places including the place where i purchased the stereo from... even spoke to local pug dealer..
i was told that i could buy an iso connector but it may not fix the problem..
i was also told buy halfords that there was a fault with my cars wiring loom ( like they would even know)

so i invest in an electrical tester and started searching for a permanent live feed ...
well i found a nice simple one

the hazard warning light switch just off the back of that ( one of the two grey leads ) so ive bought all the connectors and stuff to wire the yellow lead off the back of my stereo straight into the permanent live and hey presto perfect :) many thanks for everyones help :)
