COM2000 Help!!!

Post by andy10755 »

Hi guys and girls

Im new here so I apologise in advance if I'm going over old boring ground!

I have a Peugeot 206 cc 2L 02 plate

Let me get to the point straight away. My COM2000 unit seems to be failing and in good style. It started about 6 months ago when I noticed the headligts would come on all on their own. Sometimes when indicating the headlights would come on and stop the indication. Obviously as you can imagine this is a problem at junctions and may even cause an accident. Then over the past month or so other problems have started. My better half was driving one day to work and the airbag light came on and stayed on. The centre display on the dash then started displaying the messages "AIR BAG FAULT" and "HANDBRAKE ON" (everytime the handbreak was applied) along with the usual annoying "beeps". I took it out for a spin and she was right. The airbag light was displayed on the dash pod. It was at this point that I also noticed the speedo on the dash pod wasn't functioning. FANTASTIC :( Obviously I drove straight home and contacted my mechanic.

My mechanic stated that the COM2000 unit had probably gone and as for the speedo, it could either be the dash pinacle itself or the speedo drive sensor. I'm not a mechanic so was totally confused :?

Over the next few days my mechanic had the car. He fitted a new sensor for the speedo and the speedo still didnt work  I then purchased a second had dash pod off ebay and fitted that. Still nothing!!! However the speedo needle moved up to the first line (the one below 10mph) so I knew power was going to it. But again the speed would not register and the needle would stay still. Just to confirm all other needles were functioning correctly! Thank god!

I removed the cowling from the COM2000 unit a few weeks ago to see the what the part number was. I found a barcode type sticker on top which stated *96477519XT*. I assume this is the part number?

I have spent the past two weeks trying to source a second hand COM2000 unit with the same part number as above but with no luck! :( Every COM2000 unit has a different part number.

I swallowed my pride and phoned my local Peugeot dealership who at first tried to state that it wasn't a common fault even though the internet says different. I asked them if they could repair the COM2000 unit. Peugeot said NO. They did however offer to replace it with a new one along with a new dash pod and speedo drive sensor. How predictable  hahaha! Anyways the price was ridiculous :yikes: The COM2000 replacement alone was £350 + VAT.

So my questions are:

Q1 - Could a dead speedo be down to a faulty COM2000? Or something else?
Q2 - Can I rebuild/replace my COM2000 unit from/with another unit with a differrent part number?

I don't want to give it to Peugeot as I fear the bill will be half the price of the car and wouldn't be worth it.

I love the car, but it's driving me mad. I'm on the verge of selling it for spares!!!

Please help!!

Welcome to the forum Andy. To try and help with yous Q's

Q1 Not really. Speed is derived from ABS wheel sensor on the later models. You could try resetting the BSI which may work.
Q2 There are only two basic types I believe, two plug or three plug The multi funtion stalk is seperate.

How old is the battery? If it's old you will get spurious electrical faults such as you have. Changing the battery may well sort most issues out.
Cheers Col.

Better still, put the details in your signature.

Thanks for the speedy reply Capnol!

I will try resetting the BSI - can't hurt.

So if I want to replace my COM2000 unit is it just a case off buying another one (secondhand) with the same functions as mine? Or must the product number match exactly?

Like I said previously a sticker on top of the unit states *96477519XT* I have looked high and low, google, refurb companies, and ebay and can't find one that matches the above code. I have found ones that have the 'XT' on the end but don't want to pay out if its not going to work.

Cheers
