Replacing or reconditioning the water pump

Post by aser56tyhj »

I have a 2003 206

I am in Jakarta, Indonesia, which means I can't just nip down to the local scrap yard.

The water pump seems to be malfunctioning.

Obtaining a replacement, having it fitted etc. could all prove very costly.

Can I easily replace the water pump myself? I am not entirely mechanically incompetent.

More importantly, can I remove the pump, 'recondition' it, and put it back in?

What would be entailed in a minimal 'reconditioning'?

Replace the water pump with a brand new one, and if your cam-belt and associated pulleys/idlers haven't been renewed yet then do that at the same time.
It is not a simple job and you'll need a decent tool-kit and a workshop manual to guide you through the procedure if you haven't done it before. The new belt will need positioning and tensioning correctly and the engine locking at TDC while you change the belt to avoid damage to valves and pistons. Renew the coolant with a fresh mix. There is potential for serious damage if you don't know what you are doing.

What! For the sake of a water pump and a timing belt kit? After all that is just normal preventative maintenance on a 206 at 8 or 10 years old, depending on which engine.

Before you "scrap it" What are the symptoms? May be something else easier/cheaper to fix.
