fuel system petrol 1.6

Post by christine »

Hello, just joined Does anyone know if there is a none return valve in the fuel line of the 206cc/
Mine is a 206cc 10 years old and if left for a few hours it will not start. But if you go through the "priming sequence" EG PRESS THE ACCELERATOR TO THE FLOOR SWITCH ON THE IGN. THE OFF AGAIN " IT THEN STARTS FINE. this smacks of the fuel draining back into the tank. Any comments please.

Hi Christine and welcome to the forum.

There isn't a non return valve as such. You car is fuel injected, so has a pressure regulator on the fuel rail which regulates pressure by bleeding off excess back to the tank.
When you switch on the ign, the fuel pump activates and pressurises the rail (or should do) and if no cranking takes place switches off again.
If you start car, then pump will continue to run.

Pressing the throttle pedal doesn't really do anything, that only worked on cars with carburettors that have accelerator pumps. Doing that with a "carb" would squirt a bit more fuel to aid starting.

On your car, fuel delivery is taken care of by the ECU (computer)
I suspect the fuel pump may be weak, or pressure reg faulty so that the rail doesn't fully pressurise. Switching it off then on again will activate the pump for a second time, and it may well be that second operation that brings the fuel rail to full pressure.

I would start the diagnosis by putting a pressure gauge on the rail and see if pressure is low.
Cheers Col.
