Clutch problems.
Think the thrust bearing is away on wides 1.6 allure. It makes a nice whirling / grinding sound when sitting and driving unless clutch peddle depressed. Is it the thrust bearing? And how easy is it to change and would I be better just buying the clutch kit????

Re: Clutch problems.
Could be, but usually noisy when pressed. Sounds like might be 1st motion shaft bearings (gearbox)

Re: Clutch problems.
Sounds more like a gearbox bearing to me. It'll probably make a noise for years before causing real trouble. A change of transmission oil might help.
When you sit there with your foot off the clutch the gearbox internals are rotating, and you could hear any worn gearbox bearings.
When you disengage the clutch the gearbox internals stop moving, and the noise stops.
However, if the clutch release bearing was making a racket, then on a 7 year old car with several tens of thousands miles under its belt, and perhaps several owners too, I wouldn't bother to replace just the bearing. I'd go for the whole clutch kit and probably consider a new slave cylinder too.
See:

or buy Haynes manual no. 4613 for instructions on how to d.i.y.

Re: Clutch problems.
So I guess we need the gear box bearing then?
Gears are fine but does sound rough until you depress the clutch peddle.

Re: Clutch problems.
It's in the gearbox. The 1st motion shaft bearings, sometimes called input shaft bearings.Charlotted wrote:What is the bearing called and where will I get one?

The gearbox will need to be removed & stripped to replace it. It's probably not something most DIYers would undertake. Will upload pic of bearing in a while, but this is what you are up against.

Re: Clutch problems.
If you see the last pic it shows the bearings (seen here circled in red) When you press the clutch, this shaft (and it's bearings) stop turning (which is why it sounds to me like one or both of these bearings are failing)
It would be prudent to check/change the other bearings as any debris from the failing bearings could get into the rest of the bearings.
Post here if you need more help

Re: Clutch problems.
Front bearing can be got from any good bearing supplier, rear one Peugeot main dealer or gearbox re conditioner.
If you get stuck I can get them, but best to confirm what you need first, as gearbox may be beyond economical repair if there are other problems lurking inside.
Are you confident you can strip the box yourself completely, as you need to remove both of the clusters & selectors to get to the bearings ?

Re: Clutch problems.
Cheers mate. The gears a working 100% and don't feel rough at all. It's just the noise from a rough bearing, but when you depress the clutch peddle sound goes.

Re: Clutch problems.
I had a 205GT which had those symptoms. I put up with the noise and it never failed me.
