2003 206 1.6 cc Brakes Sqeaking - its driving me mad!!

Post by Leethebee »

Hello Newb here.

I have just brought a peugeot 206 1.6 petrol 2003 model which had new brake pads fitted when I brought the car, It has only covered 27k miles,

and after a couple of weeks the brakes started squeaking, so I removed the front pads cleaned the calipers and the discs and stuck some copper grease

on the back of the pads and the problem went away for about 4 weeks, but now the noise is back with avengance, it started lightly and has now got worse,

I have been told this could be due to cheap (pattern part) brake pads), is this the case?

I have a few questions if anyone could possibly help me with.....

The replacemant pads have no shims behind them, as standard should they have anti vib shims on the back of the pads?

Should I go to Peugeot and buy a new set of front replacement pads?

Is this a common problem with these cars and is there a fix for it, i.e. a upgrade of discs and pads W.H.Y.?

Any help would be much appreciated as I am at my wits end...

P.S. All of the noise is coming from the front brakes..

Many many thanks Lee

I don't think it is necessarily the after-market pads. Ours is still on the originals and the brakes squeal from time to time.

Using copaslip grease should help, as you have found. We have learned to live with the noise, as I think most 206 owners do.

If you buy cheap patterned pads, they do seem more likely to squeal (especially the pagid pads from europarts) Buy some good quality pads such as Mintex, and providing your discs are in good order, it shouldn't squeal

NOTE: A lot of modern pads come with a self adhesive backing- Don't use copper grease on these pads. Just clean the calipers, remove the backing paper, and fit them.
Cheers Col.

I have the 2.0l 206cc. My brakes used to squeak, in the end I bought a set of Mintex discs and pads and put those on the front, also stripped down calipers and gave them a good clean. In total it was £45 for disc & pads plus £5 for chemicals. Since then I have been squeak free.

In shorts, dont cheap out, pay the extra few pounds and buy quality parts, especially if your paying a mechanic to fit them. Premium parts usually last longer and are more effective.

I never had a brake squeak problem until I replaced the discs and pads with a Mintex set. I have never been able to get rid of the squealing I have had since. Incidentally the Mintex discs are out of balance not by much but it is noticeable. I have had the wheels rebalanced but the vibration is still there. Mintex are probably the best aftermarket brakes, but unfortunately the best is not really good enough. Bite the bullet and buy genuine Peugeot pads.

I've got Eicher pads and discs front and rear and not had a single squeak in 10,000 miles. Sure they are the cheapest ones I could find but a liberal coating of cropper grease on the pads seems to help.
Actually, I've been very happy with them and I'll replace them with more of the same unless things change.
