Dashlights come on when taking a sharp right turn

Post by Shell30 »

Hi,

I have a peugeot 206 cc 2 ltr 2001, it has developed what i think is an electrical fault. When I take a sharp right turn (usually when there is a bit of a dip to the turn) 3 of my dashlights come on (Oil, Handbrake not sure of the other) then immediatley go off when i straighten up. The car feels fine and does not loose power! Has anyone ever experienced this and can recommend what I should do? I cant afford to take it to the garage as last month had to replace the full exhaust including cat to get it through the mot which cost a small fortune!

I also drive 30 miles to work a day and would hate to break down in one of those dark country lanees

Firstly, welcome to the forum.

Have you checked your oil using the dipstick with the car standing on level ground? What was the result?

How many miles has the car done?

When was the oil last changed - date and mileage?

When was the oil filter last changed?

Was a genuine Peugeot oil filter used?

What is the thickness of the brake pads remaining on the front, and rear brakes? They should be at least 2.0mm thick (excluding the pad back-plate of course). You can see the pads through the alloy wheels.

Have the brakes ever been renewed? If so, when and by whom?

Thank you for your reply, the mileage is 73k, i will check oil levels and come back to you. The rear break pads were changed for the MOT by a local garage in October and the front pads were changed well over a year ago at a Kwik FIt centre, they did mention my front pads on my MOT but said i should have approx 5000 miles left on them.
The oil change and filter i dont think this has been chenaged in a couple of years and i dont know whther they were genuine parts.

I am loath to just assume that you have an electrical fault as the warnings may be genuine.

If the oil & filter haven't been checked/changed for a couple of years then that could be a reason for the light coming on.

If the front pads have worn then the hydraulic brake fluid in the reservoir could have gone down to the extent where it needs topping up.

If both fluids, i.e. your engine oil and your brake fluid, are just about at their minimum levels, then the action of taking a sharp turn can cause those fluids to swill to one side sufficient for the sensors to detect that they are momentarily below the minimum levels and thus need topping up. When the car has exited the bend the fluids return to where they were and back to level. I suspect that the 3rd warning light you mentioned could be a red STOP light. This is designed to come on if fluid levels get so low as to be dangerous to continue.

I look forward to hearing further from you, particularly about your oil level.

If what I have described is a correct diagnosis then topping up your engine oil and your brake fluid to the correct levels should solve the problem. Do it with the car standing on level ground, and use the correct grade of oil and brake fluid. Do not overfill them.

Incidentally, at 10 years old, if your timing belt (cam-belt) has not already been renewed then it is due to be changed. On the 2 litre engine they should be renewed at either 10 years or 80,000 miles whichever occurs first. You may take the view that you'll risk it until the car has done 80,000 miles but that choice is up to you. It is a fairly expensive job but the consequences of a snapped cam-belt are usually disastrous resulting in a wrecked engine - much more expensive. It makes sense to renew the water pump at the same time as the cam-belt.

If it was me I'd get the car serviced, and arrange for the cam-belt and water pump to be done at the same time, when you can afford it. In the meantime get those fluids topped up.

Whereabouts in the country do you live?
