I have a '52 2.0 se- she's my new baby... BUT
She rattles like hell when i accelarate and stops if i lift off the pedal, if i'm cruising she goes silent again, nothing on idle, and nothing when i rev in neutral, i don't notice it until she's putting in some effort iyswim. All gears and when she's hot or cold- makes no difference. It's like a metallic rattley noise
Part of me says turn up the stereo, the other part is screaming noooooooo! she's sick.
Googling has produced pinging, heat shields, lifters and manifold probs- any ideas?? any way of guessing before a mechanic gets hold of her and rips her to pieces shortly after sucking air through his teeth and telling me "it's gonna be an expensive job this love..." no lights have come on the dash either.

Cheekee had the exact same symptoms.
Turned out that the clamp/flange that holds the flexible exhaust downpipe to the exhaust manifold had become loose. Tightening it up sorted the problem.
