The old cold start misfire, judder problem

Post by Davels »

Ok, so I've done a bit of reading on here and I can see that a lot of people are having a cold start juddering problem with the 2.0l CC's.

Now a lot of people are saying it's the hydraulic tappets or the hydraulic followers, or the lifters. Are these all the same thing?

Price seem to start at £400 or so for parts alone, but how can i be sure this is the problem. I see a lot of people say they have this problem but not a lot of people saying the changed the tappets and it now all works.

I have changed the coil pack, spark plugs, serviced the car, changed the cam belt and water pump, change the map sensor, air temp sensor, and idle control valve allof which have no effect.
I also have the car booked into a specialist diagnostic garage on Tuesday to see if they can find the fault.

How 100% are people that this is definitely my tappets? £400-£800 quid on something that cannot be proved as the cause before works carried out sounds a massive risk.

Hi, Re juddering engine.
I to have had this problem in the past and my remedy was fairly simple, although i didn't have any excessive top end engine noise / tapping.
The problem was that for some reason the engine developed a misfire which resulted in unburnt fuel being passed in to the catalytic converter which upset the lambda sensor. All i did was to plug in a code reader and remove all the fault codes / logs. problem solved.
I think you achieve the same result by disconnecting the battery for a few hours this i think would in effect reset the ECU to factory setting. My car by the way is a 2001 2.0 SE
