Cambelt Change - 2.0L version

Post by richmmm »

Hi Everyone, I have recently bought a 206cc 2L. The car is a 2001 model so I expect a few issues that need looking at.

I have just had it serviced and I asked the garage to change the cam belt, as it has done 86K, so it is on borrowed time!

The garage quoted me £200 ish so I gave the go-ahead. Later in the day though, he called me and said he had under-estimated the job. He said that due to the extra strengthening added to the 206cc, there wasn't enough room to get in to change the belt. He said he had called a mate at the local Peugeot dealer, who said they usually took the engine out to change the cam belt! The new price for the job is £400+

I can understand what he is saying, but I don't think he has done a 206cc cam belt before. I wonder if anyone has any experience of the difficulties of the job, on the 2.0L version? Does the engine need to come out really?

Anyone have any recommended repairers near to Walsall?

Thanks in advance, Rich

I had my cam belt changed Friday, was a two man job for the mechanics. they changed the belt, all pulleys including the waterpump. I got charged £223 including all parts and labour. It cost a further 95 quid for a full major service including rear pads.

This is particularly cheap but my engine did not come out. The engine and room inside the engine bay is no different to the 2.0 138GTi hatchback. If they are needing the engine out, take it somewhere else because they aren't very good.

I know, they guy who works on my cars is a diamond. Some may argue he tries to save you money too much by cleaning and repairing things to last another couple hundred miles rather than replacing straight off to save hassle, but he views it as no trouble to pop over and replace when it does fail spreading the cost.
