My cambelt is just about due to be changed and rather than be ripped off at the main dealer I have been to a local garage for a quote. He reckons that the water pump should be replaced at the same time - is this true or is he trying to get a bit more money out of me? He quoted £220 for both - dealer was £300 for both but they didn't mention the water pump when I first asked for price.

He's giving you excellent advice and a very good price too.
If your water pump should fail soon after having the cam-belt done, all the same work has to be done again. Get it done at the same time as you have the belt renewed. That way you'll have peace of mind, and potentially save yourself another few hundred pounds in the not too distant future.
It is false economy to change the belt and not the pump as well.

How do you know it is due? If it's a 2 litre it is now. The 1.6 should be ok up to 10 years old or 100,000 miles whichever comes sooner.
However at 8 years old it's not a bad idea to do it anyway if you're going to be keeping the car for some time yet.

Yeah, it's a 2 litre. I rang Peugeot and they said it needs changing at 8 years or 80,000 miles. It's only done 60,000 but it's 8 years old now and I'd rather be on the safe side and have it changed rather than fork out for a new engine if it goes!
I tend to keep my cars until their last gasping breath (just reluctantly let my 16 year old Mazda MX3 go) so like to keep them well maintained, hence the shiny new custom made stainless steel exhaust system I've recently had fitted, with a lifetime guarantee.
I've just booked it in today and it's being done on 6th October.

I agree totally. If only everyone looked after their cars like you.

Can you let me know which garage Chushpie. Might be worth a drive over when mine's due as it seems such a good price.

Life's too short to drive around with your top on!
The garage is 'S Prochyra Motor Engineers' (Steve) at 1a Ellesmere Road, Darwen. Telephone: 01254 761800. It's just off the A666 main road through Darwen. You once mentioned that you weren't far from me, what town do you live in?
I posted a topic in 'problems - other' as there has been a strange noise under the bonnet since I had it done and it has been back in for another pump to be fitted.
I picked my car up on Monday but it's still making the noise, although not quite as bad and he reckons to have put another pump on. I've been back this morning and he is determined to make it right so I've asked for a genuine peugeot pump to be fitted and I'll pay the difference. It's going in again next Thursday and he's going to fit another cambelt too, just in case.
Watch this space!!!

Might be a good price but I like people to "get it right first time" when working on any car of mine. Personally I'd wait and see if Chushpie ends up a satisfied customer. The jury is still out on this one I feel.

My thoughts exactly!! I'll give an update when I get it back next week, so hang fire Thar before you risk the A666!

Got my car back on Thursday night with the new Peugeot water pump and cambelt and it is absolutely fine now - no strange noises. I've been driving around for the past two days with no problems, phew!!
I don't know whether it was just bad luck or that my car doesn't agree with non genuine parts (I must admit, it does seem quite a moody car) but it will make me think twice about trying to save a few pounds. Anyway, I'm all sorted and am now a happy bunny
