Noise after new cambelt?

Post by Chushpie »

I had my cambelt and water pump replaced last week but now my car makes a funny noise!

When I start the car from cold it's as it's always been (silent), but by the time I've reached the end of the road there's an odd noise while the car's idling.

I've taken it back and the mechanic's baffled! Says it may be that the water pump makes a different noise to my old one (what???) or the fact that he's taken the fan belt off and then put the old one back on. Either way, my car sounds like an old shed at the moment and it's driving me nuts. He's having a look at it on the 27th but I was wondering if anyone else had experienced the same thing.

Oh, it's not affected the cars performance in any way. (2 litre).

The water pump shouldn't make a noise.

Could be it hasn't been reassembled correctly and something is still loose.

Hope the new belt is correctly tensioned and all new parts were fitted.

Just an update -

Took it back to the garage to see if he could get to the bottom of the noise. He says it's a faulty waterpump (the bearings) and is reluctantly fitting me a new one on Monday so he will have to do the whole thing all over again! His supplier is giving him a new pump FOC but will not reimburse him for the labour involved but, as it's not my fault, at least it won't cost me anything.

Fingers crossed for Monday!

Reluctantly! That's a poor attitude.

I know! I think he was waiting for me to offer him some money for the labour, but that wasn't going to happen. Anyway, he seems OK about it now I've stood my ground.

I used him because my usual mechanic (who's great) doesn't do cambelts and he recommended him. I can understand that he's a bit peeved about having to do the whole thing again but that's not my problem. My car purred before it had the work done and now it sounds like a bag of spanners!

Never mind, roll on Monday!
