Hi,Keith from Bermuda here.
When my car is cold I noticed a knocking noise when slowing down, seems to come from the top of the engine but sounds loud with nearside window open. The noise goes away after about ten minutes.
Any ideas,I did a search but came up empty.
Thanks.

It would be useful if you posted what car you actually have, what engine size.

Sickboy has a 2002 206cc in black. He's been with us for a long time.

Good memory, any ideas what the noise could be.It's been like it for a while and doesn't seem to be causing any problem.

Not really. I guess your oil and filter changes will be up to date. Yours is low mileage anyway. Could be hydraulic tappets, but you say it is running OK.

Another possibility would be piston slap, but as I say yours is low mileage and you don't leave your engine oil in too long between changes...

If the noise is going away I wouldnt be too worried about it. could be hydraulic lifter noise as they are un-pressurised when the engine is cold. so as the engine warms up the noise goes away.

From all that I have read, it seems only to be worried about noises that dont go away once the engine is at running temperature.

I bumped into one of the Peugeot mechanics in the street,he said the noise is the tappets,it happens with a lot of 206CC's here,Peugeot can't find the problem and even if the tappets are changed the noise comes back.Mybe a bad shipment to Bermuda?
My car has only done 20,000 miles so probably not timing belt issues or piston slap.I wonder if oil additives can stop the noise?
Do I need to worry about changing the timing belt with low milage if the car is 7 years old?

Remind me, is yours a 2.0 or a 1.6?

Keith,
With the 1.6 engine you should be OK up to 10 years old with the sort of mileage you are doing. So another couple of years.
