My friend pointed out when I left hers the other night that my rear (passenger side) red light wasnt on when headlights turned on. I drove about 10 min onto the motorway home and stopped for fuel and I checked and it was back on.
I just drove to the shops and remembered to check see if it was still working and it wasnt, by the time I got back it was, I looked at the wiring going into the rear light all seemed ok, un-pluged it and plugged it back in, turned on ignition and it didnt come on.
I can not imagine it being the buld? Surely if a buld is going to stop working it would stop for good, i.e. dead?
Is there anywhere else I should look or check? lost.... :/

Could be the bulb, it could be the connection in the bulb-holder. Either way I'd try a new bulb before anything else. Make sure you get the correct one.
