Electrical 206CC problems

Hi....new to the forum but looks great....Looking for a bit of advice.
My 2001 206cc is sitting lifeless in the drive! A week ago when I went to start it on a frosty morning I put the key in and ....nothing! I could not turn the key either way! Whilst jigging the seering column about I also put the steering lock on.

It was also clear that there was some type of electrical problem....the "Economy Active mode" would come up in the dash. If I left the car it would beep as if the keys had been left. After a few minutes this would reset itself and I could lock the car....

I was thinking a low battery but recharging and jump starting the car makes no difference....so I'd only change the battery if I'm certain it is the problem. I've checked the levels and oil, water and brake fluid are all fine....

So, at the moment I've a car that I can open, put the key in the ignition and nothing else!

Would really welcome any advice.

Thanks

David

i thyink the battery must be the original....which would make it 8 -9 years old.

I'd replace it with a new one of the correct specification. If you want to get it professionally checked for a duff cell before spending your hard earned cash then do so by all means. However at that age it has already done well. Take care, some after market ones are not as tall and don't fit properly. It is worth spending the money on the one that fits perfectly. There are tips on changing the battery in the owners handbook by the way.
Let us know how you get on please.

Are your windows, wipers, audio and courtesy lights working normally? These shouldn't work when economy mode is active.

The problem is I can't even turn the key to check if anything else is active! As soon as the battery connects the economy mode activates......I think the immobiliser has kicked in and is preventing me turning the key,,,,,(Its not just the steering lock being on.......I could not turn the key and when jiggling the steering wheel around the steering lock also came on).

Thankls

David

I think you're right David - A dealer job, or a good Peugeot indy specialist. Sounds like the ignition switch at fault to me, but I'm just guessing.
Let us know what transpires please, and good luck!

hi Ron

Update......

I've been waiting the best part of the week to get the car towed to the local garage....

Anyway, expecting the car to be picked up tomorrow I thought I'd have a final look......

Economy mode was still coming on so I decided to randomly play about and try things....so I'd put the side lights on, leave it a minute and try to unlock the key.....I'd lock and unlock the car with the remote.......

Well, quite unexpectedly the lock came free and the key turned and started the car first time! I was completely taken by surprise!

Anyway I've tried it 5 - 6 times and there is no problem whatsoever.......

Whatever I did it kicked out of the ecomony active mode......the new battery is also helping.....

Looking forward to getting back on the road....

Thanks for all your help and advice...

David

Well done David, sounds as if your persistence has paid off.

I'm pretty certain that the new battery will have been the crucial issue, but as you say, you obviously did something to help jog it out of economy mode.

Hopefully should be fine now. Enjoy spring now it has arrived. Ron

Well.....Been ok on all MOT's...until this one......

Still in garage.....needs several things including brakes all round and bushes which connect to the back axile........seems the car had lowered and the wheel was actually rubbing the inside arch!......New tyre required as well......

Garage said this bush replacement is a problem with many peugeots......

Hopefully get the car back in the next week!

But it will certainly cost a few hundrew quid!

Just when I thought my luck was in!
