Hi,
I recently bought a 206cc from an Independant trader in ashton-under-Lyne (nr Manchester).
i first saw the car 3 weeks ago- liked it, he had V5C and agreed to get it MOT and 12 months tax (on his insurance though I paid for the taxation). The trader had this car for few months- initially the owners wife was driving it- so they taxed it, changed front tyres etc. the tax had run out and needed a new one. So I paid the deposit.
1 week later I went for collection- he hadnt taxed the car by then - so he sent his man to the post office. There he was told that when they last taxed the car -did not change the registered owner (ie the trader now) on V5C.
So now they had to send the V5C to DVLA to get it registered in their name first and then will need to send it again to DVLA to put my self as the registered owner.
I am told by the trader that V5C was sent in post on 12th march. Its over 4 weeks now and they havent yet got it back. They are least interested now.
I called DVLA and they havent got any record of change of ownership.
Now I am stuck here- not having the V5C and Trader not bothered.
What should I do? i am aware that by paying £25 and form V62 - I can get the V5C document from DVLA- Should I do that - spend another £25 ?
Pls advice
thanks in advance
(sorry for such a long story)
VFC document- mess!!!

It can take up to 6 weeks so I would give it another fortnight before doing anything.
I would get a V62 prepared ready though. Sod's law may work in your favour. If you don't prepare one you will need one eventually. If you have prepared one ready you won't need it!
The only way to take control of the situation is to spend the £25 on getting a registration document yourself, but I would suggest wait for that other couple of weeks to elapse. I'd ring him every day for the next fortnight to check if he's received the V5C. I'd pester him so he wouldn't forget me.
The cost of less than 1/2 a tank of fuel. Small price I would say for peace of mind.
You won't be buying off that dealer again will you!

just an update---
I rang the trader and he was unbeliveably rude and arrogant. I was left with no option but to contact Consumer direct. It was no more about V5C- but no way a consumer should be treated like that. They adv me to send a letter based on their template- must admit it was very official!!!
Any ways- posted it by special delivery. Next evening I got a phone call from the trader to say that they have called DVLA and will get the matters right. I then called the DVLA to confirm that the details have been updated and they will send me the V5C in couple of days.
I my experience this trader is extremely unreliable and after the business (I mean - once they have the money in thier account) they have no accountability- hence avoid then all all cost. I always bought cars from Traders for peace of mind - and thats what was lacking this time.

Well done! Glad you're standing up for yourself. I usually buy my cars privately, risky I know but I try to do my homework first. My VW I bought from a dealer - Pulman Volkswagen in Durham. Excellent service and a brilliant deal.
