Has anyone come across this before - if so how do you get around it ?

With an import vehicle , the DVLA will not register the car until you have a cover note or insurance cerificate .
But the insurance companies I have checked with , will not insure the car without the registration number (even with the chassis number). Unlike a dealer the broker does not have plates to pick from.
So catch 22 - any one seen this before ?

i think some insurance companies will do it but not too many. might be an idea to use yellow pages.

i know axa direct won't do it under any circumstances as my dealer messed up putting my private reg on retention and were transferring it to the 1st CC until i told them not to.

they gave me the chassis number and axa weren't interested and were still the same when the dealer phoned.

derek

Skippy,
I was about to go through the same problem until i cancelled because the company ordered the wrong spec. I cant help you on the insurance thing but the company i was dealing with said i was allowed one journey without insurance ie i could collect the car from the port and drive it home. I dont know whether yours is being delivered to your door, if it is then this email is pointless. Just thought that at least you would have the car at your home although that is probably worse, being able to see it and not drive it. Speak to the company you are importing from or the DVLA. This must be a common problem. Good luck.
Keep on truckin'

Skippy,

I have just finished importing my CC and I used Tesco.com. They were the cheapest (I'm 23) and they had no probs insuring on a VIN number. They just said as soon as I get the Reg number ring them up for an update.

Give them a whirl!

Interesting point about the cover note - reminds me of the problem i had....
I was insured thru Axa out here in Germany for my old car (Rover - how pants!) and was told that Peugeot would not register my CC without a Cover note. Axa under no circumstances would issue a Cover note for the CC, only a cover note for my Rover (pointless?) Basically i was told that my dealer (Natocars) would usually register the car at DVLA Bristol without a cover note or anything, just on the Vin/Chassis No. (I believe they had some kind of Gentlemens agreement?) However, Peugeot insisted on registering the car using DVLA Wimbledon, who need a Cover Note. Which my Insurance company (Axa) wouldn't provide...
Confused? I certainly was and couldn't see a way round this problem. Anyhow, managed to do a bit of sweet talking in the end and sorted it out. (Natocars sorted it - wouldn't like to divulge how here in public!)
The other annoying thing was when i had to bring the Rover back from Germany to chop it in, I had to go to DVLA Bristol, put 6 months roadtax on it, drive 20 minutes down the road to the dealer. They saw it was taxed, gave me the disc, and i claimed a refund - but lost £20 in the process POINTLESS!!!!

In response to benno's response. I think you may find that it is illegal to drive a car in the UK that is not covered with at least 3rd Party insurance. This is only to cover anything (or one) that you hit on your single journey.

I guess the "goverment" has to protect us all - but I just wanted to insure and register the car - surely a chassis number is a lot harder to alter than the registration !
