Hi I am new to this site and have read several problems related to mine but have no real answers, can somebody help please. I have a peugeot 206cc 1.6 litre 2004 from new and have just experienced my first problem. When I start the car up from cold it starts fine but after my journey when the car has warmed up, and I try to start it again it will not start. I just get the clicking noise from the starter motor solenoid, checked connections and they all seem to be ok. I am reluctant to change the starter motor as i tried it six times this morning when it was cold and it started everytime.
Please help!
Please help!

Doesn't sound like battery or starter motor does it, if it's starting from cold?
I'd still suspect a poor electrical connection, maybe an earth lead from engine/gearbox. They have been known to crack/break on other 206's. Besides checking the leads for tightness check them for cracks too. Are the battery terminals tight and clean?
Report back how you get on please.
Oh, and welcome to the forum.
Good luck,
Ron

Thanks for the welcome and information Ron.
I have removed all the earth straps and cleaned them up, refitted and tested the voltage using the multimeter between all the earth connections and the positive side of the battery and get 12.58 volts which is ok. Tried the car and it started took it for a test drive and just came back and it wont start again, it must have took me that long to do the connections earlier that the car had time to cool down! Whilst driving took note of the water temperature which was 85 degrees and the oil temperature was 90 degrees which seems about normal unless anyone knows different. Back to square one i'm afraid.
These are the same symptoms as detailed on one of the threads on page 2 of this forum from julee on the 18/07/08 titled car not starting - help!!! There is no report to say what the outcome was, I have checked for leaks around the coolant bottle as she had a leak by the sounds of it and my coolant level is ok.

I have PM'd Julee to find out the outcome to her starting issue.
If moderator REAP reads this thread he may be able to help. He's a whiz with 206's and I bet he'll have come across the problem before.
My own suspicions now are that you've got a coolant temperature sensor playing up.
I'll PM reap and ask him to let us have his thoughts.
Ron

Found this on another site:
Starter won't turn the engine over when hot
This gave me lots of anxious moments in AAY during the first few months of rallies. If I stalled at a junction or in the middle of a test I had to wait for several minutes before the starter would spin the engine over. I checked all the leads and braids and bettery connections digilently, looking for a high resistance joint, but it turned out to be a worn out starter. Possibly the brushes were shortened and the spring pressure consequently weaker, or the brushes were sticking in the housings when hot, but replacing the starter cured the problem. It did seem to be perfectly OK when cold, although if you've read the Sabre Story you'll know we had a devil of a time starting the car for the very first time using that motor. A similar problem when I was rebuilding the "wreck to a runner" SE5 also turned out to be a worn starter.

Thanks Ron for this info its great, I have also contacted Julee and got a reply from her to say that it was her starter motor that was at fault in the end. So now two people have said its this it looks like finding a new starter motor now, its a right pig where its situated but I will have a go at removing it myself.
Thanks again for everyones help

We've got an 05 1.6 ourselves but it's low mileage so we've had no problems whatsoever with ours so far. How many miles has yours on the clock?
Let us know the eventual outcome please. It can't be much fun doing a starter motor in this cold weather. Within 10 minutes I can't feel my fingers out there!
Good luck Dave, and a Happy New Year to you.

HAPPY NEW YEAR!!
The starter motor has now been replaced and the car is back to normal and running fine. Thanks for your help Ron its was greatly appreciated, and the mileage on mine is 18,600 only low mileage I know but it must be all the short journeys that have been made that has killed the starter motor.
Thanks again for the help.

glad you fixed it,soz for very late reply. was gonna say starter.lol. the bush in the end acts as a heat sync and expands when engine gets hot, this causes the end of the starter to stick in the housing. you get the click click sound but starter wont turn. when it cools down it obvoiusly releases the end.
sorry again for the helpless late reply.

Not helpless at all reap, you've explained what causes it to happen. Can they be fixed or is replacement the only answer?

Re: STARTING PROBLEMS
Same problem with my wife's 206cc 1.6 allure on a 54 plate (2004?)
Worked fine when cold but just clicked when hot, although it didn't draw heavy current when it wouldn't work so I think it could be a solenoid problem however the solenoid and starter are a single unit.
Checked round for prices and got prices between £350 and £140 fitted.
Decided to do it my self. if anybody else is interested please find method I used:
Bought New exchange starter Motor from GSF £58-00 + VAT.
TOOLS USED:
13,10 and 8 mm AF open ended / ring combination spanners.
Medium flat bladed screwdriver.
METHOD:
All work done from inside engine compartment, only time I had to go under car was to pick up dropped spanner!
1) Disconnect battery and remove from car.
2) Remove 3 screws in base of plastic battery box and remove from car, note clips on outside of box need to be opened to unclip batery cables also there is a 'clip on' vent tube on the bottom of the box.
3) For ease I undid the 2 Jubilee clips fastening the plastic ribbed air pipe from the filter to throttle body and twisted it out the way to give a bit more space.
4)Starter is nearly visible and is on the far side of the engine about 350mm below the throttle body.Starter is held by 3 bolts Using a 13mm spanner I unfastened the top fixing bolt. Head of bolt is on righthand side of clutch housing and is withdrawn towards passenger side wheel.
switching into gynacoligist mode I then managed to remove the other two bolts, these withdraw in the opposite direction and are lower down around the starter flange. The starter then slides off of a boss and is hung on the wires. ( In my case my shirt cuff and the two wires.)
5) Deft handling and a bit of blasphemy allowed me to manipulate the starter around so I could see the two wire connections to the unit. 13mm spanner removed the Main battery cable to the unit and an 8m spanner removed the smaller brown "energise me" wire.
6) A bit more questioning of the parentage of the starter and it quite easily came out between the engine and bulkhead past where the battery had sat.
7) Refitting is the reversal of above, ensure spring washers are used under nuts holding wires on, but don't overtighten. Tighten mounting bolts nice and tight so they won't work loose during use.
It took me about two hours to remove old unit and refit new one. If I knew then what I know now it would have probably taken little over an hour. Although knowing what I know now I would probably have asked my son to do it!
Total cost Starter £69.60 inc VAT + Swear Box £56-00 (5 pence per curse)
Hope this helps someone, it has been good therapy for me!
