On the way home from the supermarket, 2 miles away, my car started to shudder, become sluggish and then came to a halt and an 'anti pollution' sign appeared on the dashboard.
I managed to restart it and crawl home (it sounded like a tractor) and then rang my local Peugeot clinic who said to bring it in so he can look at it but he wasn't sure what the problem could be.
I have done my research here and on other web sites and see that it is not an unusual problem but I cannot find a definitive answer on what the problem can be.
I want to avoid a huge bill by telling the mechanic what the problem is. Can anybody please help me by telling me what the sign means and what the problem is?
Many thanks
Gary

The exact same thing happened to a friend's Vauxhall Zafira. Coil packs can and do fail.
Glad you got it sorted, and not TOO expensively. Good job you're in the AA.

Hi,
My wife has a 2.0cc which has the same problem now and again, usually in the winter of after not being used for a week or so.
Browsing the forums it seems dealers haven't got a clue and only believe what their computers tell them. No surprise there, given the standards of modern mechanics.
I work in F1 electronics, so last night borrowed a fault code reader. These are £35 to buy, but dealers charge £47 to plug theirs in for 1/2 an hour. It came up with one logged fault which was 'multiple cylinder missfires'. This could be caused by many things on the ignition or fuel side of things.
In short, the dealers may change something and clear the code and the car will drive away happily, but the underlying fault may still be there. My next job is to compare a 2.0 hydraulic tappet against a 1.8 which people recommend changing to.
