Timing Belt

Sorry if this has been previously discussed I need some advice - my 5 year old 2.0 (Cruella) is about to be driven across and around Europe for 6 weeks - she has 42,000 on the clock and the mechanic has suggested replacing the timing belt - can anyone tell me how much you would usually pay for this part and the likely labour costs involved. I want the car to be running as near perfect as possible for an epic journey!

Welcome to the forum Majella,
I think the timing belt kit will be about Â£100, then you'll have another Â£100 or so labour. Doubt if you'll get much change out of Â£300 by the time VAT has been added.

Well... here goes...

Full service: Â£114.86
Supply & Fit Timing Belt Â£241.80
New water pump: Â£60.45
rear brake pads: Â£45.34
new fuel pipe Â£0
re-gas air con Â£0

Plus Â£301 on other parts

Plus VAT Â£897.17

So hopefully Cruella will be a lovely drive to Ibiza... and failing that I shall just cry....

Still intermittent squeeking on the air con despite the garage flushing through some oil.. quoted Â£462 for the parts to replace it... not including labour...

Wasn't far wrong then at Â£300. You were wise to have the water pump done at the same time as the belt that drives it.
Should be perfect now for your long drive.
I'm off to southern Spain in a couple of weeks myself, down near Albox. Not taking the 206cc though. We're flying from Stansted into Murcia then hiring a 207 for the stay there. I drove to the south of France last year in the Merc and spent Â£600 on petrol alone! This time the flights are Â£600 in total (for 3 of us) and the car hire Â£85 per week including a full tank of petrol, and I can take it back empty with no extra charge. Thought it would give me a chance to try out a 207 quite cheaply.
Good luck with your trip. Have you taken the precaution of getting yourself a space-saver spare wheel, and a windstop?

Ha ha - no it won't save you petrol. It'll save a lot of buffeting from turbulent air in the cabin when driving with the roof down. If you're carrying a lot of luggage perhaps you won't have the roof down on the long journeys though?
My wife doesn't like the roof down without using the windstop as she has long hair.

if you have a puncture all you normally have in the 206cc is a couple of aerosols to inflate the damaged tyre. If the damage is severe they won't necessarily get you out of trouble. We always carry a space saver spare wheel on long journeys so that the journey can still continue even if we have a badly damaged tyre. It takes up valuable boot space but can be carried in one of the rear seats.

"Alcatraz" my 51-plate 1.6 CC is just coming up to 50,000 miles.

Do you think I should have the timing belt replaced? And the water pump?

Car is running perfectly at the moment (touch wood!)

Rob,
Every 80,000 miles for the 1.6 16v engine so you should be alright for a while. I don't know of any "time based" interval though but I'd suggest every 10 years, so again, should be OK until 2011 I would have thought. For a definitive answer you could always phone your Peugeot main dealer or independent specialist.
