I've bought my car new in the summer of 2002. Driven 90.000 miles with it. I still have not changed the timing belt. I intend to change it around 120.000 miles. The booklet says 60.000. It's risky? I know but I like living on the edge :). I have never had a timing belt broken on me and I have never changed a timing belt either, so I am gonna take the risk :)

So far my car has only had an oil change 4 times. I've since then only had to exchange the breaks, wheels, exhaust and one battery.

I never have changed the spark igniters and the car has never failed to start. The only trouble I had was an empty battery. So if one just drives carefully with their beloved 206 cc there is no need to spend those hundreds of pounds for the services. Just add some oil now and then and take care of breaks/wheels/exhaust.

How much did you say a new engine will cost when the belt does break?
As it will - eventually.

Alright, I've decided to renew the timing belt. Got an offer from the official Peugeot dealer for around 190 pounds for the belt + the other 'rolling' material.

One more thing. They said: it's wise to exchange the waterpomp as well. Is that really nessesary or is it just taking money out me pockets? Would cost 80 quid extra and another 30 quid for the mulit-belt.

David,
If it was me I'd get the water pump done at the same time, and the multi-ribbed belt. If the pump has done 90k miles then it could fail soon, especially with the tension of a new belt, and all the stripping down work would have to be done again. Just think of the labour costs involved. Just the same as changing the belt. Well worth the extra money, and a sensible decision to get the belt renewed by the way.
All the best,
Ron
