I'm well aware of brake pads that have grooves as standard, but for whatever reason, the Peugeot ones don't, I just don't fancy the idea of taking standard pads and using a hacksaw or whatever to slice out a groove - it really shouldn't be necessary to do this sort of thing.
This may work, but it is a solution that I personally wouldn't contemplate, if you have to take these sort of measures then something fairly basic isn't right.
If Peugeot had started producing grooved pads then I would have tried them - they would have had to go through EU safety and type approval and I'd have had been happy to fit them (as I said, it's my wife's car).
But yes, you're right, I probably won't be happy with the car now as three years is a long time to put up with an irritating problem like this and it's time to change.
I'm off to look at MR2 roadsters and possibly the Focus ST170 tomorrow - just have to see what I'm offered as a trade-in.
Thanks for all the positive comments I've had - incidentally I've had an email from Peugeot today and a customer services representative is going to contact me.
If this doesn't fix the sqeaky brakes, I'm selling the thing

Whereabouts in Devon reap, or is it top secret?
Devon just happens to be in the middle of Dorset, where I live, and Cornwall, where I come from...

Just because you're paranoid, it don't mean they're not after you.

Reply from local Peugeot dealer in Gloucester for those interested:
I have received correspondence from Peugeot with regards to your vehicle and its continuing brake squeal. There are some brake pads available for the 206 to overcome this problem ( pt no 425276 ) but past experience has taught us that the best approach is to skim the brake discs as well. I dont know the mileage on your car or whether it has already had discs fitted but as the discs wear a lip forms on the outer edges and the brake pads continuously rub against this lip causing the squeal. Might not be the case but worth a look. If you wanted to bring the car down sometime I can have a look and give you an opinion on what might be required.

The thing is all cars will have squeeking brakes due to the compound used to manufacture them ..... I know the 206cc is particularly bad though .... the new brake pads fitted to my car under warranty made a big difference. I still get squeeking but nowhere near as bad.
You have to remember youve got 4 disc brakes on these cars so its 4 times as bad as a cheaper 206 with only 2 disc brakes.
Err .. or so ive been told by independant people.

I can tell you that its a 2004 cc and that the breaking is great, by far better than before...
First time with such brakes and it was very exciting ...
I have to dig up the box of the brakes for part numbers and get back to you soon ...
As for the price it cost me about 1500€ for drilled-discs and 4-pot calipers ond high pressure tubes ( thats the name i think
) but i know that you can only purchase discs...
