Nice car the TT. I think I mentioned to Carl that I tried a 3.2 V6 before making a final choice of what to have.

Happy driving matie, I also miss my CC but the quattro is great, I feel safe with it in my A4 Cab.

Can you post a review?

We're heading towards a (second-hand) Merc CLK 320 Cab at the moment.

No problem Carl.

Audi build quality isn't as good as the merc IMO.

The plastic buttons and dash look good on the Audi but it just doesn't quite have the same quality feel or looks as the CLK, the CLK definitely wins in this department.

The Audi automatic isn't as smooth shifting as the merc which is one reason I went for the more responsive and cheaper manual.

Performance is good.

3.0 L V6 is satisfyingly responsive with a greater sounding double exhaust note but the Audi engine sounds a little strained between 4.5K rpm and the 6K red line. With a 0-60 in 7.9 for the Q, it also doesn't feel quite as quick as the 320.

Audi handling is excellent.

The sports suspension has less role that the CLK and like the TT the A4 Q sticks to corners like glue, in heavy rain the car feels as safe as houses. The merc less so but the CLK's I have tried feel ultra safe.

Unfortunately I've had similar amounts of warrranty problems with both makes.

IMO the Audi is slightly better value for money new and options are cheaper. The Q version has the better handling. The CLK wins on quality and performance and is the better value of the 2 second hand.

I forgot to add I've had far more looks and waves in the Audi than I ever had in any of the mercedes including the AMG, I suppose its the smoother lines. The Audi really does look gorgeous especially with the roof down.

The Audi nappa leather electric lumber sport seats with extra leg supports are also inexpensive and really are the business, they hold you tight round bends and are ultra comfortable, you still feel fine after a 6hr long drive which I never ever felt in the mercs.

Horses for courses I suppose, good luck on the CLK.

I think the wife's now swaying towards an A4 Cab!

TBH we only have the low 20s to spend, so it's either a 1.8T (ugh!) or 2.4 A4 Cab, or an older CLK 320. I would prefer a V6, but I'm sometimes lured by the temptation of chipping the 1.8T to 225 bhp.

My theory is this: an A4 Cab is a £25k car (in this spec), whereas a CLK 320 is a £40k car. So surely the latter has to be a better second-hand buy, because it's done the bulk of its depreciation. The 3.2 V6 is the engine of choice for most punters buying a CLK, but I get the impression that an A4 Cab buyer would either want to pose and hence have the cheapest engine (1.8T) or be into performance and have the biggest engines (S4 quattro or 3.0 quattro). This is further evidenced by the fact that very few of the smaller-engined ones on the second-hand market are quattros.

I think the A4 Cab is a lot more modern-looking than the CLK (and even the new W209 CLK, which I just don't like), but I'm not sure if that means the styling will become dated quicker. And Audis to me are "new money" and a sort of thinking man's car, whereas Mercs are a bit more smug.

The A4 is unveiling a face change, the saloon in November 2004 and cab will follow in July 2005. Hopefully the saloon should give some clues to the cab. My thinking is the main change will be conservative with deeper grill like the new A6 but not sure if this will follow on to the cab.

The facelift is why I spent 34K on the 3.0 Q instead of the more expensive S4 (which I dearly wanted but figured would hit me harder in the short term depreciation stakes).

I reckon the face change could work in your favour. I've seen the pictures somewhere on the net (saloon only, but assume Cab will be the same), and it's fugly like the new A6 and A8. ;)

For anyone taking the A4 route I would seriously recommend only the sport model, the sports pack option with uprated firmer suspension and sports seats make this a much more desirable car to own and drive. Second hand prices should be similar to non-sport models.

Just heard the news, link below. Kinda good and bad for me. It official, no face change for the A4 cab for the next couple of years at least. Good news for current owners and resale values.

Kinda relieved, the deeper grill on the new A6 and A4 saloon kinda needs getting used to and I couldn't see it on the cab anyway.

Can't see them changing the TT either, after all, if it not broke....

The link roughly translated:

Ingolstadt/Palermo (dpa/gms) - a revision of the AUDI A4 Cabriolets does not line up at present. That became in the context of the presentation of the new A4-Generation in Palermo on Sicilies admits. The Cabrio is only sold for two and a half years.

The new version of the AUDI A4 is to work more aggressively.

"with it it is optically a still very young car", like that AUDI press speaker Josef Schlossmacher. Up to further the open A4-Version will probably have to get along therefore without the new, large radiator grille of the remaining A4-Modelle.

The fact that regarding the sales promotion nevertheless still something becomes necessary shortly Design Kosmetik is not to be accepted: The predecessor sold itself - apart from a small Facelift - almost invariably to eleven years long. And of the current A4 Cabrio AUDI according to Josef Schlossmacher already now already more copies to the man brought.
