Lol - I don't need anyone to encourage me spending money, I'm good enough at that myself! If i am in any way responsible for the whole jinx thing i greatly apologise!?! I just hav this thing about me that 'encourages' others to spend money
On the good news front though, it'll only cost me £9 to buy a replacement part to get the headnuit up and running again. Seems a little steep for a bit of plastic, but it's better than having to listen to the noise of the engine all the time!

errrrrrr hang on a sec............
sony, kenwood, pioneer all the higstreet brand head units and all are pretty much the same level and sayin that sony headunits arent good teddy isnt true cuz i've had no trouble with mine and i'm happy with all my sony gear, ok its not the best there is by a long way but it aint the most expensive either and looks the nuts
alpine are slightly above in terms of sound quality from their head units but they look like shite compared to the sony's and pioneers
The other non-high street brand headunits such as nakamichi are the best for sound quality, but are expensive and look crap but sound amazing
My sony aint exactly an ordinary head unit its their top spec one and i have no qualms with the sound quality it delivers but i am using an amplifier to power the speakers not the built in one on the headunit.
My opinion is go for a sony or a pioneer, stay away from kenwood tho

Carrie,
As you can tell, everyone has their own personal preference! The best bet is to go into somewhere like Halfords and try some of them out and see what you like and what you don't.
Or you could try heading over to a dedicated car audio forum such as http://www.talkaudio.co.uk and reading the recommendation posts in there.

We have Sony components in both cars and I have made it so we can swap and add changers from each other’s cars and that is why I have stuck with Sony. My only qualm with Sony head units is that the plastic surrounds can be crap. And require a sealant to stop them rattling. Other than that they offer great value for money. Loads of optional components are also available though.
I see on another thread that you want an MD changer. I believe Sony have exclusive rights of the MD technology hence you will find Sony MD are the cheapest around. The Sony MD changer also fits well in the CC glove compartment.
I found Autoleads stalk adapter to be crap and I ended up using the Sony plug-in remote. Infra red joystick was also no good as I wanted to control it from the steering column and at this location it was out of range for the stereo.
If you want to get an amplifier for a Sub then I would suggest getting a higher spec Sony head unit with a sub woofer RCA lead. The reason I say this is that when the hood is down the audible sub frequencies are reduced and with higher spec Sony head units it is possible to increase the volume of the sub at the head unit. Have a look and listen in your local ICE shops, but buy online, as it is much cheaper. I normally use www.incardiscount.co.uk , but then found these guys www.mcs-direct.co.uk much cheaper.
