So why aren't fire engines and ambulances done for impersonating? You are actually legally entitled to display a flashing blue light on any vehicle if it is being used as an emergency ambulance.they aint legal. otherwise why would it say on the packet not for steet use. also if its blue (which the majority are) you could be done for impersonating a copper. thus making them illegal.
Neon/LED washer jets are perfectly legal. It's all down to the vehicle lighting regulations. There've been extensive dicussions about this subject on uk.legal. The only relevant restrictions are that you cannot show a red light to the front and that certain lights must be white.

Oh, I should add that it's ok as long as they don't flash. If it's a steady blue light and it's not fitted as a 'position lamp' then it's legal. Washer jets are unlikely to be determined to be 'position lamps.'

Relevant part below (RVLR is Road Vehicles Lighting Regulations 1989):
Relevant part below (RVLR is Road Vehicles Lighting Regulations 1989):
AND> The RVLR states:
>
> 'Restrictions on fitting blue warning beacons, special warning lamps
> and similar devices
> 16. No vehicle, other than an emergency vehicle, shall be
> fitted with-
> (a) a blue warning beacon or special warning lamp, or
>
> (b) a device which resembles a blue warning beacon or a special
> warning lamp, whether the same is in working order or not.'
>
The RVLR specifically define a 'special warning light' as "A lamp, fitted to
the front or rear of a vehicle, capable of emitting a blue flashing light
and not any other kind of light."
A steady blue light is not, and does not resemble, a warning beacon or
special warning light. If you wired them so they flashed, then they could be
said to resemble a special warning light, and therefore be illegal, but a
steady blue light does not resemble a special warning light, and is
therefore not illegal.
AFAIK there has never been any successful prosecution for a car showing a
steady blue light.
> Therefore blue lights showing are illegal.
>
Wrong.
> schedule 2 also states with regard to the colour of front lights:
>
> 'White or, if incorporated in a headlamp which is capable of emitting
> only a yellow light, yellow'
>
Schedule 2 specifically refers to 'front position lights' (sidelights) which
as you correctly state must be white. It does not refer to any additional
lights fitted to the front of the vehicle, these are covered by RVLR part 2,
section 11 paragraph 1, which states "No vehicle shall be fitted with a lamp
which is capable of showing a red light to the front".
A blue light fitted in the windscreen (as stated in the OP) is not a front
position light, and does not show red light to the front, and is therefore
legal.
However, if you changed your sidelight bulbs to blue bulbs, they would be
illegal, as they are 'front position lights', so must be white.
> therefore blue lights to the front are illegal on this point too.
>
Wrong again.
> therefore blue lights to the front are illegal on this point too.
These are obligatory lights, not ones fitted to make the vehicle pretty.
Whilst there may be an argument it seems that the extra lights fitted may be
optional front position lights ( please bear in mind that a position light
is one used to show the presence and width of a vehicle) it doesnt seem
likely.
The Police National Legal Database concludes 'we believe that the
prosecution must prove that such blue washer lamps' ( the sort on bonnets of
boy racers escorts) ' are front position lamps to gain a conviction. We do
not see this as an easy task and may prove to be impossible.'

Stephen. I've just posted the legal situation above, including relevant parts of the RVLR. What more do you actually need?
I'd tend to trust the opinions of legal professionals over the editors of Passion Motorsport.

Of course I should point out that even though they're technically not illegal, anybody who fits them is a fool and deserves all the hassle they get from the bizzies.

I can't give a yes or no because there seem to be cops out there who don't understand the regulations in the same way that you can park perfectly legally and still get a parking ticket. It's then up to you whether you want the hassle of appealing it.
Remember: just because they are the police, it doesn't mean they know the law.

Restrictions on fitting blue warning beacons, special warning lamps and similar devices
16. No vehicle, other than an emergency vehicle, shall be fitted with-
(a) a blue warning beacon or special warning lamp, or
(b) a device which resembles a blue warning beacon or a special warning lamp, whether the same is in working order or not.
the blue glow resembles it and because it doesnt flash they are not in the same working order.
