To the owner of the mangled belt (in pic), had you recently topped up the coolant?

Belt looked similar on my old MG TF, which was down to me spilling coolant down the side of the engine.

No idea. I bought it as a non rumnner, and found the belt in this condition.
It wasn't the belt that was causing the non running by the way.
Cheers Col.

Don't forget that when a lot of new cars are launched they hope to pick up fleet and business sales. To do that they try and keep the running costs low ... and set cam belt intervals high.

If they are unlucky they get a lot of early failures and warranty claims (which they try to fight off as wear & tear). So when the time is right, they re-issue the change intervals. A case in point is the Alfa 156 TS. Originally 72K and 6 years, now .... 36K and 3 YEARS! And that's official. I wouldn't bet that Pug didn't think the same, but they have a bigger base and that would upset a lot of potential buyers ...

I think 60K and 6 years would be a good compromise on the 1.6 or 2.0 CC engines.
