Hi there! Just picked up my 206cc yesterday and am in love. Its a 1.6 allure in iron grey with lama leather (im a bit scared about keeping the seats clean though!).
Just wondered if anyone knows if you still have to go slow at first whilst you are running the engine in? I forgot to ask at the garage, and im not sure whether it still applies to new cars? Would be grateful for any advice.
By the way, great site found it really helpful when buying the car though was a little scared by all the reports of things going wrong! fingers crossed, eh......
does any1 know about running in?

it doesn't really apply to newer engines as it used to, but most manufacturers still recommend taking it easy for the 1st 1000 miles or so. I would drive keeping the revs below about 4.5k for the 1st 1k miles, and don't push the engine hard when it's cold etc
I know on bikes they recommend that the 1st 600 miles are kept in the lower rev range (eh 8k on a 12k bike) until the engine settles in

The engine can easily handle high revs as a newborn. There are two opinions on this, running hard to seal the engine in and prevent future problems, and taking it easy on the engine to prevent future problems
IMO running the engine hard from new gives it more power for its early years.
The reason for not pushing the car hard from new is because of other components such as brakes, suspension etc... which need bedding in, and as this is not a high performance vehicle I would take it easy.

thanks for that, ill probably take it a bit easy at first anyway but i wont worry so much now i know its not such a big deal. i was being a bit extreme yesterday doing 40mph down the dual carriageway!
ill probably get a new car when the warranty runs out so like you say, it shouldnt be too much of a problem for me.
Thanks for the advice guys!

I would suggest doing between 1500 rpm and 4500rpm. After about 5K Miles I would Increase this to between 1000rpm and 5500rpm, but only when the engine is warm. I have been told it is also not good to keep to the same revs whilst the engine is new and so keep off motorways if you can. Also be easy on your brakes as these also need bedding in.

Sorry but this makes me laugh. 1st, apart from cars like MG's that are very dated, I don't know of many cars that need 'ran in' but to keep off motorways is a joke.I have been told it is also not good to keep to the same revs whilst the engine is new and so keep off motorways if you can. I think engines have moved on in recent years.

When i bought my Honda bike i was told to take it steady to get the brake pads and tyres scrubbed in...for safety about 40-50 miles
Then use all the gears and all the revs in each gear (except the top end maybe) to ensure it all bedded in nicely, engine and gearbox etc...
And this was taking delivery of a 100+ BHp 1000CC motorbike.... In the mother of all rainstorms !!

LOL 1500 - 4500 revs for 5k.
I bought am Impreza WRX. The service book says take it easy for 1000 miles then have a mini service ( oil and filter change ). Then you are pretty much free to rag the arse off it. This is the first car i've had to run in. I've had a 2.0cc se and a 206 GTi from new, never ran either of them in, and never had a single problem with the engines.

Wow, thanks alot guys for all your advice, Im doing ok so far, I haven't got nowhere near 4k revs and im keeping it just below 70 on the motorways.
I have managed to clock up a whopping 450 miles and ive only had it a week, I keep thinking of any excuses to drive round in it and im hoping the novelty is gonna wear off soon cos i cant afford all this petrol, ha!
Thanks again for your help!
