I have been hearing alot on the forum about these and i was wondering which is the best.
I would like one but i dont want it taking up much room in my car (as little as possible)
Price is a issue, want a good one but dont want to be paying a arm and a leg. Also are there any other costs after you have bought it.
Something that is easy to install.
and last but not least performance. one that actually works well.
Are these things 100% gaurenteed to spot speed camera though?

I've just brought a snooper S5R brand new of ebay for £180 and this is one of the best rated radar detectors available.
Not had much chance to try it out but will let you know how I get on.

Before spending your hard earned cash on a radar detector be warned that laser/radar detectors are likely to be banned by the government fairly soon - as they are in other parts of Europe like France. So Louis there may be some costs after you've bought - the fine for using it
GPS detection systems that pick up fixed cameras will remain legal though.

For the amount on money you're spending on a dedicated unit consider buying a PDA (eg iPAQ) with bluetooth GPS and decent software such as TomTom - there is then a free addon for static spped camera locations. Then atleast you get a full navigation system as well as a removable PDA!
A friend of mine picked a full system (iPAQ, Bluetooth unit, car fix kit & TomTom software) for £300 from Dixons not so long ago.

Sounds like a good plan, I even understood some of it. However I never have felt the need for a navigation system, I can find my way round with maps well enough, and I'm behind the times with technology so I've no idea what PDA, bluetooth or TomTom is.For the amount on money you're spending on a dedicated unit consider buying a PDA (eg iPAQ) with bluetooth GPS and decent software such as TomTom - there is then a free addon for static spped camera locations. Time to do some searching and educate myself.

i got the snooper sr6neo which detects all carmeras even them laser guns from a mile away only thing i dosnt detect for me is the red light cams if u run a red light 2 near me and dont seen to be picked up also its 2 seprate units the radar detector and gps screen which means if radar becomes illegal u can turn that off in the memory and just use the gps but u can also hide the radar under the bonnet so it only looks like a gps screen anyways works real well

Does anyone know if the snooper S5R picks up gatso camera's when you are heading them straight on? I've only been able to pick up signals from them after I've passed them?

It does seem to pickup signals through the windscreen as it picks up auto door openers I presume when I drive past the front of the local Asda. I guess it just means that there are a lot of false speed cameras round my area.

I have a PDA-based solution (HP Ipaq 2210, Tomtom 3, Tomtom Bluetooth GPS and the Pocketgpsworld speed camera database). Works fine in both cars -- in the CC you have to have the GPS receiver either on the rear parcel shelf or in the shaded bit near the rear view mirror, because the heat-reflective windscreen also reflects the GPS signals!
Here's a pic (not in the CC, though):

Prior to that I had a Bell Euro 980 radar detector, which worked pretty well. But it doesn't detect Truevelos, although it does detect mobile speedtraps which a GPS-based system won't. If you're interested in giving it a try, I'll sell it to you cheap as I don't use it any more (say, £50, providing I can gather all the bits together?)
