Venting Required

Good evening.

AAGGGHHHH! Ok that's a good start.

Had my new Sony MP3 player installed yesterday (along with new front speakers, a sub and an amp). It's great, but it creates massive gaps between tracks which is really annoying because most of my albums sort of 'flow' between tracks. That was annoyance number 1.

Then this morning I noticed the radio lost its memory overnight - all radio stations, all settings. Found out they had to switch some wires round, so took it back to installers (Music World in Sheffield) and they did so. Can't verify that it worked yet because...

They broke the roof - somehow the computer got completely out of sequence and nothing will make it work again. I've had this happen before and was able to fix it with a combination of manual roof ups and downs and resetting the windows(!), but this time, no go - and to boot (quite literally), the back end is wobbly because there's no hydraulic pressure keeping it locked down after doing the manual attempts. Driving above 7mph creates those joyful 'bee-bee-beeeps' over and over again.

Therefore my car is now under 'safe' lock and key at the local Peugeot garage...

But they can't see it till at least Monday.

Was the Sony player an mp30?

Also what did you use to rip your tracks- you can use editors to remove lags, or put then all into one long track

No it's an MP70, but not far off

My mp3s were ripped with Audiograbber originally and there are no audible gaps on the tracks which are supposed to be seemless. I used windows XP to write the tracks straight to CD - there's no way of removing lag as far as I am aware - that is only an issue when writing CDAs (normal audio cds) not data cds filled with MP3s, as I presume you're reinforcing

Yeah, the only way round it is to make it one long track - but the 'fast' forward on the unit is painfully slow and if you stop the car/change source etc and come back to it, it plays from the beginning of the track and not where you left off. D'oh!

I actually wrote a letter of complaint to Sony about how pants I think it all is!

I had an mp30 which I loved to bits, but did suffer with problems

It lost all its settings every time the engine was switched off and you had to press reset to get it to play. Got that fixed and then it wouldn't accept cds, eventually got a new unit (and no more probs!!

)

However mp3's are fab- you can use 'cool edit' (search tucows- its free) to eliminate any gaps

I also tended to use freerip, as it would find all track names etc

I do use editing programs like CoolEdit when there's pops or clicks, but there are no gaps in these tracks - it's the player that's putting them in when it changes between them!

When you play an MP3 CD, does your MP30 go from one track to the next with no audible gap?

sorry if I am aking a silly question but....

when you used the allen key thing to do the manual roof, did you then use it afterwards. This locks the pressure in the system, it might have stopped the 'wobbly' bit ??

I only mention it as it doesnt cover that bit in some manuals, it was only on the video I got from peugeot that Lyndon has now put onto the site.

Not a silly question at all Rob! I had to ask myself several times whether I'd re-turned it back again when trying it this afternoon. I have a feeling however that the allen key only controls the roof hydraulic ram pressures (correct me if I'm wrong), not the boot... because there was no problems lifting the boot, whether the key slot was loose or tight. Putting the boot back down manually without having the hydraulics (the ones either side in the boot lid itself) kick in has always resulted in a 'not completely locking' wobblyness for me.

I took it to a dealer first who said they would have a look at it and he explained how the boot part seals down using pressure from the rams - he and his monkey couldn't fix the problem though and the earliest they could book it in was wednesday so that's why I went to a different one in the end!

back to the cd question
i use nero to record cds
and there is an option to remove the 2 second gap that most burners put in between tracks (part of the red book (CD)standard, i think)
see if that helps
but i think if you do that the cd won't play in a regular cd player
but will play fine in any mp3 cd player

The 2 second thing only applies if you are burning an AUDIO cd. I'm burning a DATA cd with mp3s in.

You can 'feel' the gap on the Sony device because you can hear the laser seeking the next track and see the wait while it tries to fetch ID3 data from the file.
