Misfire

Post by DJMadness29 »

Afternoon all.

I got a phone call from the missus yesterday saying her car had broken down. Went to have a look and it was misfiring badly (would only run for a matter of seconds then cut out). Got it recovered home and the breakdown man said he suspected it was the coil.

I've taken the coil off this afternoon and removed the spark plugs (Bosch ones fitted about 3 months ago) and they are all fairly sooty but the far left (cylinder 1?) is a worse than the other 3.

Would you say this sounds like it could be the coil?

I know its really hard to guess without having the fault codes checked but i thought it was worth a shot.

Its a 52 1.6 cc.

Cheers

Dan

No management light?
Sounds like it's running rich. This could be many things so live data required (a good pro reader will read it)
Look at IAT, O2, fuel trim and coolant temp, and compare with what is expected

Sorry, Anti pollution light has been on 'for a while'.

The exhaust snapped by the cat about a year ago so had a new cat back system then.

Likely to be an O2 sensor, but check it first rather than parts roulette
Cheers Col.

Yeah, cat middle and back box fitted.

Think im going to have to find a mobile mechanic to come round and read the codes. Bloody car.

This is why I prefer older cars lol.

Morning All.

So to go a bit further.

Got a ODB2 reader and checked the codes. All it had stored was P0420 - Catalyst System Efficiency Below Threshold (Bank 1).
I cleared this (and charged the bloody battery) managed to get the car started (still running really rough) managed to rev it up to about 3k. Then when I let back off it started to idle properly but with an ever so slight miss. It now starts and runs until you turn it off.

I have tried to get a reading through torque for the o2 sensor but cant get it to display.

Any ideas? Or any ideas for better ODB2 software?

Cheers for you help so far.

Peugeots are notoriously hard to get a proper reading from unless you use a good workshop diagnostics, a PSA specific one or PP2000 .. (you will need the latter to read the BSI system)

Remember as well Peugeots from 2001 are EOBD compatible .. never OBD2 (US version) ..
