wheel bearing crisis

Post by jimthorley »

guys need help after getting my 206 cc recently the wheel bearings were not lasting 100 miles.I changed both the hubs and put them on with the bearings that came with the 2nd hand hubs and again the left front wheel bearing has went. is there any thing else that could be causing brand new wheel bearings to go so quick im at the end of my patience with the car and am seriously thinking of getting rid of it.thanks for any advise you can give
cheers

For new bearings to last only 100 miles means something is mega-wrong, and would normally be evident on assembly. You've changed the hubs, but to no avail, so what about the shafts? Are they straight?

You said you used the bearings that came with the second hand hubs??? You are likely to damage them when changing (unless you used hub carriers as well)
Cheers Col.

Yes oem bearings and the replacment hubs bearings were tight and smooth.the drivers wheel seems to be holding up its only been changed the once.but passenger side now 3 bearings.the local farmers autocare have done the bearings using a bearing puller so all good there.its standard wheels on car. I called a independent specialist he recons the car might have the wrong shaft in as he says there is 2. 1 fits neat but the other would leave about 3 mm of play enough to destroy the bearings so taking car into him friday for a strip down. I sometimes feel when driving there is a slight knocking near middle of car i am guessing movement in the shaft at gearbox. But is this because of the bearing or a bad shaft?? I jacked car up today and wheel movment was shocking and when you pull on shaft the brake disk and parts move away from hub.new disks badly scored been on the car less than 2 weeks. I am hoping it is the shaft now as i am at a loss to what else it can be. Farmers are stumped when i said about shaft they said could be. There bloody usless. Will update once other guy investigates.hopfully get to the bottom of it. Just got the body work done on damaged quarter panel and cars looking great but its pushing its luck with me i dont do problem cars if i can help it. fingers crossed. And cheers guys your advise always welcomed jim t

Hi guys looks like the fault has been found. The cv boot was the wrong one for the car. The guy nailed it in 10 mins. 55 quid supply and fit new one. What a diffrence the brakes are now working as they should as since i have had it far too much brake peddel travel. Happy days :D

Strangest reason for worn out wheel bearings iv'e ever heard of lol i'd be more inclined to think it had wrong cv joints or loose bearing nuts if you had excessive brake pedal travel.

hi was the cv joint my mistake lol. seems 2 years ago so says the expert a load of peugeot cv joints were badly machined but mine was just plain wrong.it was well off from butting against the back of hub causing movement and splitting the bearing.

There are 2 types of driveshaft and you ca normally tell by the hub not type (Ignore the text as its from a Saxo but is the same as as the 206)

Hi leegsi. Yeah the guy who sorted it showed me both types and showed how mine had been sitting. I am just surprised with the local farmers auto care not picking up on it. As they done all the bearings and suggested new hubs. Probably didnt even need those or the new master cylinder ive been left with as they had said to buy one of those aswell. So they wasted 150 quid on a eventual 50 quid job. But heyho shes running great now.just ordered a k and n replacment filter as the standard 1 one is a wee bit grubby.was going to do a induction kit but i think my car has a mass flow sensor so wont suit and there is just no room to work in the engine bay was hell enough fitting new uprated head light system.
