clunking gear change

Post by smokey »

Hi all, I've just started to notice that I get a clunking when I change from 1st to 2nd but not changing into another gear. I've also noticed that the gear stick itself is a bit wobbly now. Could this be to do with the gear linkage bars?

This is on a 2002 model with 78,000 on the clock

More likely to be dragging clutch or syncho I would have thought.

Ouch time then as I'm not mechanical expert, anyone know the rough cost at a garage?

Does it crunch when engaging reverse? If so, more likely to be dragging clutch, if not more likely synchro.
Cheers Col.

It only does it from 1st to second but if you change gear slowly there is no clunk

If the gear stick itself is more wobbly than it was then the linkage rod cup joints could be getting worn. Next time you're under the car you could check how they are. Sometimes you can get away with fresh grease, but on a 13 year old car with your mileage you might benefit from new rods. Won't cost the earth.

Cheers Grandadmonkey, I think that I will have to get a Haynes manual for the car, I guess these are the set of 3 rods you can get off the Internet, which are all different lengths. I'm sure there will be some sort of guide to do it online net?

Cheers for the help

I'd get them from Peugeot myself. You'll be sure of getting the right ones, and, in my experience Peugeot's prices are reasonable. Up to you though.

I just offer the new rods up to the old so that I know I'm exchanging like for like. Push off at each ball joint using a broadbladed screwdriver, then push together the new after cleaning the ball and lubricating with grease. I use mole grips to make the joint as they are force fit.
