Assuming no warning lights or messages, I would start by checking all inlet pipework for air leaks, and assuming that's OK, give the throttle body a good clean out with carburetor cleaner or brake parts cleaner. They sometimes get clogged up with an oily gum like substance.
If it's not already been done, that engine is overdue a cambelt.
Cheers Col.

When were the spark plugs last renewed? Have you got the correct Bosch ones in it? Our 1.6 got hesitant and jerky after our plugs had done nearly 30,000 miles and brand new Bosch plugs cured that. Is your air filter clean and dry? Look for cracks in the breather pipes/hoses round the top of the engine as they go brittle and crack if not careful when renewing plugs etc.

While on the subject of filters don't forget your pollen filter - won't affect your engine running but a 2 minutes job while you've got the bonnet open. If they get blocked they can cause your heater resistor to overheat and burnout.
