You undo the plastic casing using the nut shape on the end. Element is a paper filter that fits into casing. Screw it back on.

just tryed with mole grips very tight mind you so was the sump nut some one likes there spanners lol

thats a first had to use a breaker bar exertion and socket never seen a filter so tight.

The filter cover/cap should only be torqued up to 18 lbf ft (25 Nm). Someone must have been a bit brutal.
The sump plug should be 22 lbf ft (30 Nm) according to Haynes.

I think that there is a rubber seal between the housing and block which suffers over time and (guesssing) a quick remedy would be to add more torque. Mine leaked a bit and the garage said that they had to order the seal separately as it is not included with a new filter. Plausible?

More likely they didn't change the seal and it leaked. I've always got a new seal with the filter.
