Heater Fan Speed and squeek

Post by Karrot »

Hi Folks.

My little 51 plate CC is slowly getting to a point where I'm happy (some parts and fixes needed, but she is an old girl) however I have 2 questions regarding the heater fans.

I have a 2.0 SE with the digital climate control. All functions work well, with the AirCon and heaters being able to either freeze or cook the contents of the car :D All fan speeds are operational via the manual settings and the climate control does back off the heat when the cabin warms up, so I assume the temperature sensor is working. The system also redirects air to windscreen / feet / vents automatically.

My questions are these

One thing I have noticed is that the fans never seem to back down when on auto with A/C or in Eco mode. Initially they spool up to full, then back off to about 3/4 but never lower than this unless i set it manually. Is this normal?

The second question is : is there a way to add lube to the fan unit? on 1/2 speed is develops a chirping squeek that is somewhat annoying.

Cheers

To lube it you would need to remove the motor and oil it or similar. Are you sure you haven't got a leaf stuck in the pipework somewhere (make sure the pollen filter is in place)

Cheers Col. I've stuck my arm in to the intake cavity under the bonnet as far as I can and found no filter. I get no errors on the LCD console, just date, time and temperature. just bought on from Amazon tho, cant hurt to put one in if its missing :D

Its definitely a squeek from the motor spindle as drops in pitch and slows down as the fan shuts off. I'll look at whipping it out this weekend and seeing if there's a way to get some silicone lube in to it.

If you look into that space under the two intake grilles on the bonnet, you should see the filter quite plainly towards the rear of the car. If that is missing it is possible to suck a leaf into the intake and with the fan on full speed they act like a reed in a wind instrument and produce a screeching noise.
The sound will slow with the fan speed slowing down but will abruptly stop when the air flow drops to the point where the leaf stops oscillating. Just be careful you're not chasing red herrings.
You OK with removing the motor or do you want to know how?

Cheers Col. Definitely no filter in there, just a nice open hole. I've got a filter on order, should get here soon.

I should be ok with the motor removal, seems to be a case of remove glove box, disconnect wires, twist to release (possibly one screw if the 'fix' has been applied.)

Unless I'm missing something.

Cheers

Just to round off this one.

Spent the evening using up a surplus catering size box of swearing whilst sorting this squeek out. Getting at the heater fan is easy enough, getting it to go back in, well, that's another game altogether.

It seems the squeek was coming from the power wire socket. I should have taken pics, but didnt. The socket is a separate moulded plastic piece set in to the case of the fans motor housing. I can only assume that is was moving slightly in there and causing the squeek. A squirt of silicon spray between the two and all is quiet (for now)

I removed the unit to inspect, in case it was bearings or the fan itself rubbing, but everything seems fine.

Fingers crossed.
