Car immobilizes for no reason.

Post by mark farrier »

I have recently become the proud owner of a Peugeot 1.6 Allure....but have a problem.
Sometimes, for no reason the remote will not work and the car is completely immobilized.
To overcome this I lock the car manually and everything works again !!!
Has happened when I've filled the car with petrol and not even locked it.
Has happened first thing in the morning having used the car the night before and everything
has been fine.
Please help.

Try replacing the battery in the key.
Cheers Col.

ignition will not start.....would this still happen if the remote battery needed replacing ?
At present I lock the car manually......then activate open on remote and all is back to normal.
This has happened several times and for no reason I can think of.

No. Key battery wouldn't cause that. I misunderstood original post. Have you got another key you can try?
Cheers Col.

Yes I have a spare key. Have tried, same problem.
The problem has happened 5 or 6 times now.
I can lock on remote or leave the car unlocked and return 5 minutes or 5 hours later and everything
is alright or there is nothing......car is completely immobilized.
To correct, I manually lock walk away return and then remote works and all is normal.
My girlfriend stalled the car yesterday and had the same thing happen. Did as above and
all was working again.
Could it be faulty battery terminal under bonnet ?
Thanks for your help.

Has it got the correct battery? The battery for the 206cc should be 190mm tall, as opposed to the 175mm tall for the hatchback. Some people have been known to fit the wrong one which can put strain on the battery terminals and cause breaks in continuity.

However, from your description, I wouldn't have thought this would be the cause, as you are walking away from the car then just walking back - which shouldn't affect the battery connections.

As the above post states, it wont do any harm to have the battery checked. other possibilities would be the
earth connections and maybe have the alternator voltage checked. The CC is notoriously sensitive to correct voltage or strange things happen.
what year CC do you have?

This looks like a case for PP2000 to be plugged in. Sounds like a developing immobiliser or BSI fault.
Possibly worth trying a BSI reboot.

BSI reset

Good advice. Where are you located Mark? It's worth putting your town/city in your profile so that you don't have to keep repeating it later. You should be able to find someone reasonably local to you that has "Peugeot Planet 2000" and who can do a diagnostic which will nail the fault. If you were near to me I could do it myself, but failing that can still point you in the right direction.

Arnold ~ thanks for your help. What is "Peugeot Planet 2000" ?
Please point me in right direction.....located in Bristol.
I am going to change the battery in the remote as I have spoken to a friend who has had the same problem
but not with a Peugeot..................cars were a lot easier 30 years ago !!!!!!

PP2000 is Peugeot's own diagnostic software. There are links to download it on www.peugeotforums.com and a Peugeot Planet Map which people can stick their locations on, once they've got to grips with it.
They're usually (like me) just enthusiastic tinkerers who like the satisfaction of sorting out stubborn cars!
There's BOUND to be someone in the Bristol area who you could find to do a diagnostic on your car for you. You don't need to do any downloading, they'll have the software already installed on a laptop and an interface lead which plugs into the diagnostic socket in the car.
Only thing is, on the aforementioned website you have to be above 20 posts before you can PM anyone. However they have an area set aside for bumping up your post count. It's a odd system but it's enough to deter the spammers.

Good news bad news...........Problem happened again on Friday 13th September...nothing working
including remote key fob.
However problem now solved. Called garage out as car is under warranty and they checked the
battery connections...connector (clip on type) was connected but loose. Tightened up and all is
back to normal. a small section of the cover was fouling on the connection causing it to ride up.
Cut this back so the clip now sits flush on the battery.
Simple when you think about it but as problem was so random I would have expected fault to show
more often....I can only assume connection worked itself so loose that battery supply was cut for
good. for the record car is 2003 1.6 Allure.

So my post (number 7) above was along the right lines by the sound of it. If you've had to cut back the cover it could well be that the battery is not the correct one for a 206cc, but a cheaper, smaller 175mm tall battery designed for the hatchback. As I said before the correct one for the 206cc is 190mm tall. If you have further problems remember that the one for the 206cc is more powerful (to cope with the higher demand that the roof operating system places on it).

Or stck something under the battery to raise it in the box if it's fairly new or doesn't need replacing yet.
