Glow plugs, orange lights and DPF failures

Post by Steve--o »

Hi all (Grandad),

I have an unblock diesel filter warning on my 81K 1.6hdi 206 (2005). So that's about the life of my particulate filter and perhaps that's all I can hope for, however, this made me realise have no pre-heat orange light showing on ignition key position 2.

Tested today and have voltage at the glow plus and relay is closing etc.

So two questions if you have the time. Am i right glow plug failure is the biggest cause of DPF failure and if I've got power to the plugs is there any other likely cause of no orange pre-heat light except all 4 glow plugs are gone?

If I get the plugs fixed does this model have auto regeneration of the DPF? I understand it has a fluid filled DPF (eloys fluid or similar). Don't want to take it off and change the fluid only to have knackered plugs ruin my hard work.
The plugs are a bugger to get to and I'll most likely snap one off in the head so off to the garage for this one. No code reader at this address.

Thanks very much in anticipation.

The glowplugs won't cause the DPF to fail.
They are only really used as part of the emission controls for engine start as those engines don't really need glowplugs to start unlike the earlier models. In this weather they would only come on for seconds if at all. I haven't got the exact details to hand but glowplug timings are ordered by the ECU dependant on ambient and coolant temperatures.
I believe yours is manual regen. You can clean them with a presure washer if regen doesn't work.
Cheers Col.
